James Walter BUCKLAND Pro Golfer 1939 to 1969
« on: Sunday 17 December 23 16:56 GMT (UK) »
I belong to Banstead History and am trying to help a German Golf club looking for information on this individual – they have a trophy named after him. He joined the Royal Artillery in WWI then stayed on in Germany after the war, first as instructor to the officers then as the Pro Golfer in Cologne and later Dresden.
We know about his military history and we know that in 1935 he returned to the UK and married Katchen Senta Knoop previously Effelberger.  He set up a golf school in London and she was involved with Ballet production.
We know of addresses in London, Merton, Sutton and Carshalton/Tadworth where he died in 1969. There is more detail about the German golf club and our search to date on our group's site at https://www.bansteadvillage.com/picture/number811.asp.

I am after three things namely:
Any golf club he was associated with in the UK over the 30 years.
Any addresses between 1950 and 1963 as I have been totally unable to find any
Any descendants who may have memories or documents etc.
The holy grail is a photograph of him.

Thanks
For any help.

I can't help with what you are looking for, but I'm intrigued by the fact that there is no record of his death.

One website gives his death as being on 18 February 1969.  No record of this on FreeBmd, nothing on Deceased Online.  There doesn't appear to be anything in newspapers nor on Family Search.

Hi, Thank you for taking a look. I do have his death cert (you have correctly identified the date) and I have also ordered his marriage cert and wife's death cert.

The best article in the newspapers is dated 8 or 9th Jan 1936 and is reprinted on our site at https://www.bansteadvillage.com/picture/number811.asp.

I have to agree that there are a number of records that I should normally be able to find easily but don't appear to be there which is why this search has been particularly difficult.

Have you looked at the (German) Hickory Society Cologne?
They have done some research.

Yes born 1898 Sunningdale.

It is the Hickory Golf Society that contacted me asking for help.

As mentioned, we know about his early life and it is the period from the late thirties till he died which we all interested in. That said, we appreciate any effort to solve this mystery and we have now established that his brother George was also a Golf Pro who went to Australia. I have an advert from his golf school.

After much research and over 400 emails I did manage to find a photograph of this golfer in North Carolina. We know much of his life story although not that much about his career after returning to the UK.

All information has been passed on to the Hickory Society of Cologne who intend to add the full story on their website. Thanks to all those who responded above.
