Trying to trace Scottish ancestors, completely stuck!
« on: Thursday 21 December 23 12:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I’ve been trying to do my family tree but I’m completely stuck on my paternal grandmothers side.

All I know is that she was called Mary Reeves and was potentially born in Paisley around 1925, then at some point moved to Kilbarchan (my dad was born there in 1957) before she moved to England sometime in the 1960’s, where she lived until she died in 2010. I’ve found a potential birth certificate for her on ScotlandsPeople website but I don’t know for sure it’s her so I haven’t ordered it. I can’t find anything relating to her on ancestry other than her marriage registration.

I’m really keen to look in to this side of the family tree but I don’t know her parents names or if she had siblings so I am completely stuck and out of my depth.

Can anyone help in anyway at all? Even if I could just find a way to find out my great grandparents names, it would probably be the start I’d need to help me get going.

Thanks,
Michelle

Hello Chelle 1
Welcome to Rootschat
Do you have her death certificate? Or does any of your family as from this as well as getting her exact age it will say who her parents are.
The thing is if you bought the birth certificate you’ve seen how would confirm it was her if you don’t know any information about her ?
It’s maybe easier to work back from her death, that being a certain, therefore if you are going to pay money for something I’d say buy that.
Good luck and keep asking for help, they’re a very friendly bunch on here.

Was this the birth record that you found?

Hello again, just had a quick squint at Scotlands People

So assuming that your two definates are her name and where she was born plus a approximate date of 1925

I searched for a Mary Reeves birth from 1920 to 1930 in all of Scotland and got 5 results for the 10 year period.

Elizabeth Mary Reeves 1922 Hamilton

Doris Mary Reeves 1922 George Square (Edinburgh)

Mary Reeves 1925 Johnstone and Elderslie

Mary Hutton Reeves 1930 Rattray (Aberdeen)

Mary Reeves 1929 Partick

Assuming that you have good evidence that she was born in Paisley then the third one is very likely to be her.

Obviously everything has to be backed up with evidence so her death certificate would be a solid start
.
Good luck

Unfortunately an English death certificate will not give her parents names. You might be better off getting the marriage certificate.

Was Mary Reeves husband T* W* Brown. Where abouts in England did she die in 2010.

SS

No, her husband was Robert Lyons. She lived in Peterlee, County Durham, so I assume she died in County Durham but I can’t find any record of her death.

No unfortunately I don’t have it and I’m not in touch with the family that potentially would have it. It’s been such a struggle to find any trace of her on ancestry
