Isabella McMeekin
« on: Sunday 31 December 23 11:34 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with a birth record for Isabella McMeekin please?
I believe she was born in Ireland around 1839, her parents are Matthew McMeekin and Isabella Carnaghan (I have marrage record)
she married James Hamilton in 1858 in New Kirkpatrick, Scotland and she died 1919 in Anniesland, Renfrewshire, Scotland (I have death record)
I have tried all different spellings of McMeekin, McMeechan, McMechan etc...
any help would be appreciated, thanks

Not quite what you asked but I can see her in the 1841 census as MacMickan and 1851 as McMeckin.

In the 1841 they are in Bothwell Holytown Lanarkshire.

In the 1851 they are Ayrshire.

In 1841 census there is an elder brother John aged 4. He isn’t on the 1851 census so possibly has died.

The best you can hoped for is a baptism record as Civil Registration didn’t start till later in Ireland.

Bryansford is a small village in County Down, Northern Ireland. It sits at the northern side of Tollymore Forest Park, roughly halfway between the towns of Newcastle and Castlewellan. The village is within the townlands of Ballyhafry and Aghacullion, in the Civil parish of Kilcoo.

Since her birth is before the start of full civil registration for births in Ireland (1864), you would need to check for parish records to find baptism details for Isabella and her siblings.

Good luck.

Potential clues to narrow down an area, such as the one from 1871 posted by Kay99, are always welcomed though. That's why it is important in opening posts, to give as much detail as possible from the research you have personally undertaken already.

So, with Bryansford as a possibility, from Kay's helpful example (and you seem to confirm this is the same Isabella and that the information was already known to you), we can tell there was at least a McMeechan presence there in 1840 (being a John and a John junior). Which, even if no connection with your line, at least connects the surname (or variation of), to the area, in the timescale you are looking at.

I believe she was born in Ireland around 1839, her parents are Matthew McMeekin and Isabella Carnaghan (I have marrage record)

Do you mean Isabella's 1858 marriage details (which you have gone on to mention), or as you have bracketed the comment directly after naming her parents, is it their marriage you have details of? If the latter, can you share same.

Do you have Matthew and his wife's death records too? Can you share their respective parents names/occupations if you have?
