To be able to try to help, more detail would be needed. (Only names of people still living cannot be posted.)

From your mother’s birth certificate, can you please give….
Exact date of birth
Place of birth, and include the street address on the certificate.
Name of father
Name of mother
Include occupations of parents if recorded
Who registered the birth? And when.

From your mother’s marriage certificate, what is the name and occupation of her father as recorded exactly.
Who were the witnesses, and do you know how they are related to your mother?
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

When and where was your mother born,?
Obviously you cannot name any living people, but, how is the birth certificate worded in relation to her mother?
And what is the occupation given for Hugh?
Who was the informant.
If they are not married and the mother is not claiming to be married, does the cert make any comment about Hugh being present for the registration?

Redboxed again Neale1961  :). But I will leave it as it shows we are thinking alike.

To answer your question, if you want to know more about your grandfather and his family history, of course you should keep digging.

You say Hugh was born in the 1920s. The most recent census available to view is 1921. I may have misunderstood, but are you saying you have found Hugh on the census, or are you referring to another possible family member?

For someone who has only been tracing their family history for two days you’ve done well to get back to 1400 on one of your lines.   ;)

Hello, sorry I’m new to how this forum works!

Yes, I found a hugh on the census but not really much information other than this guy died in 1992 in Liverpool, pretty close proximity to where my family is too (Manchester) but can’t find if he was married (looks like he lived with his sisters.

Found some amazing information on the other side of my family though! Traced back to Swift (Swyfte) and Wickersley who seem to have been noble!

There is a 1953 marriage in Cheshire but Cheshire BMD shows him as Hugh Joseph Conway so not Hugh John

I strongly suspect Hugh John Conway never married.

He wasn’t married to my Nan and it’s always been a family mystery.  One I would love to solve.

On my mum’s marriage cert, just says ‘Hughie Conway’ and job title ‘Chauffeur’.  My mum was born in the 50’s, so Hugh would have been born 20’s+.  She does have brothers and sisters with the same name.

He wasn’t a witness or in her life!

Thanks everyone for your interactions… really helpful
