Entwisle family
« on: Monday 01 January 24 11:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for help to trace my grandads Father's side of the family I'm really hitting a wall. His surname was spelled Entwisle (no T) but obviously when I search the records I have found records with the spelling Entwistle.

This is what I have so far
Grandad: Hugh Entwisle 1940-2017
His father was John Hugh Entwisle 1905-1961 born to Joseph J Entwisle c.1876 and Margaret Williams c.1876. John Hugh was a painter & decorator he met a woman in Bournemouth (Maggie) and they had my grandad. Their marriage didn't work out and John Hugh came back to Liverpool with my grandad and brought him up there as a single parent. John Hugh  went on to marry Margaret Dicks and died in 1961 in Liverpool.

John Hugh had siblings James b1903, Ernest b1910, Margaret b1912 and Leonard b1914. I have found them in the 1911 census living at 35 Waterhouse Street, Everton. I am happy that I have found all the information on them other than Margaret Jr 1912 as I don't know much about her.

I am hitting a wall with John Hugh's parents Joseph and Margaret and also his grandparents which I think are Joseph Entwisle and Ellen or Eleanor? but I'm really not sure.

Margaret's father was Thomas as it is on their wedding certificate. But there are loads of Thomas Williams with a daughter called Margaret around the same time. It's obviously a common name.

Joseph J was a grenadier guard and I have found him in 1901, 1911 and 1939 census. I believe he was originally from Manchester. When I originally did my research I thought I'd found them coming from Blackburn or Bolton ways but this was confirmed that it wasn't the right family. Margaret I think originated from Liverpool.

I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks!!

Just some basic facts so that we are not all looking for the same things.

The 1911 census shows Joseph aged 35, born Manchester and Margaret aged 35, born Liverpool.

When they married in 1901 at All Saints, Liverpool, Joseph's father was Joseph, a labourer and Margaret's father was Thomas, a labourer.  Witnesses were James JOHNSON and Eleanor ENTWISLE.  Joseph's address was 24 Bean Beau Street and Margaret's 13 Sheriff Street.

On marriage Joseph was a soldier and in 1911 he was a Provision Porter.

Stated dates of birth - Joseph 11 May 1876 and Margaret 22 March 1876.

Does this fit with your Entwistle research - from Lancs opc https://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html
Marriage - from Latin
27th June 1874 Salford Cathedral

Joseph Entwistle - Salford - parents William and Ann
‘Helenam’ (Lancashire BMD has Ellen) Duggan, Salford - parents Matthew and Mary Ann
Witnesses Daniel Gorman and Rose Maynes - both Salford

A Banns notice gives Joseph’s address as 2 Dickens Street and Ellen’s as 11 Alexandra Street.

Lancs opc https://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

Shows 7 baptisms to Joseph and Ellen including Joseph 1876 and another Joseph, 1979.

I think the second is possibly William as there are births 1878 and 1879 for William with mmn Dougan and Duggan.
