John Dawes Ross > George Ross
« on: Friday 05 January 24 10:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

First post- hope to contribute well to this great community.

I am just interested to see if anyone can help with additional info that would help me verify that:

George Ross DOB 08 Dec 1809
is the son of
Thomas Ross 1779 (married to Ann Rowton)
who is the son of John Dawes Ross 1735 (Married to Elizabeth Rowton)

They all lived in Leicestershire.
George Ross' wife was Jane Stevenson, I think.

If you need more info please let me know!

Welcome to rootschat  :)

They all lived in Leicestershire.
George Ross' wife was Jane Stevenson, I think.

It is always best to work backwards from what you know

George Ross married Jane Stevenson on 18 January 1830 at St Margarets, Leicester.

There are 2 possible baptisms for children of this couple at St George, Leicester, George on 14 Apr 1830 and Thomas Frederick 01 October 1834 - fathers occupation A Butcher.  This family are at Albion Hill, Leicester in 1841 and 1851.  Is this the family you are referring to

ADDED
In 1851 George senior gives his place of birth as Evington and his age as 40.  Later census have it as Leicester

Welcome to RootsChat from me too.

Certainly Thomas ROSS was the son of John Dawes ROSS:
"On the same day [22 May 1847], in this town, aged 68, Mr. Thomas Ross, third son of the late Rev. John Dawes Ross, late vicar of Syston, and rector of Peatling, in this county."
Friday,  May 28, 1847
Publication: Leicester Journal

Another death notice:
"On Saturday, aged 68, Mr. Thomas Ross, for forty years the faithful servant of the Messers. Burgess, woolstaplers, of this town."
 Saturday,  May 29, 1847
Publication: Leicester Chronicle

However, you need to be sure that your George is the son of this Thomas. As Rosie says, it is always better to search backwards. Having said that, Is there a will for Thomas ROSS that may mention children? Or have you seen the marriage entry for George and Jane STEVENSON - are there any witnesses mentioned that may help?

Burials that might be of interest at Welford Rd (dates are dates of burial, not of death)

Catherine, mentioned in previous post, is buried in a different grave, plot cA 366; is she a sister of George maybe? I see she died at Guthlaxton Street just a matter of days after Ann Jane (above). Who's Henrietta Pickering? Maybe a married sister?

There was a John Dawes Rowton Ross bapt at Loughborough in 1806, son of Thomas (a stapler) and Ann. Given the family names, I imagine this is probably the same family.

There's a pattern of baptisms to Thomas and Ann Ross (as found on findmypast). The first 2 were in Loughborough. The subsequent ones were in St Margaret's or St Marys', Leicester. Names include Catherine and Henrietta, as per the burials above (there are others). There is also a George, 1809, but unfortunately this is the only one with a transcript only, rather than an image of the PR, and the transcript doesn't give the name of the church! The Leic FHS church reg CD does confirm that it was in St Margaret but again, there's no image.

Edited - I've found an image of George's baptism but it doesn't give any extra info. It's not listed on FindMyPast but if you have access to FindMyPast, then find the image for the baptism of Eliza Matilda Ross in 1808, then click forward on the filmstrip at the bottom of the webpage to p 138 of the register. George's baptism is there, but the clerk/vicar obviously ommitted him initially and the details are squashed between two other names. All it confirms is the date, 8 Dec 1809, a dob (which I can't be sure of) and parents Thomas and Ann Ross. No address, no occupation of father.

Thomas Ross's will is online (woolstapler of Leicester). He left everything to his two daughters, Catherine and Henrietta. No other children are mentioned.

Henrietta Pickering's will is also online. This refers to Ann Jane King as her niece and Charles Ross King as her great-nephew.

Charles Ross King's birth reg q 4 1860, Leicester, mmn Ross.
Ann Jane Ross m Frederick King in Leicester in q1 1860.
There was a baptism for Ann Jane Ross at St George's in Leicester in 1832, but the parents were given as George and HANNAH (not Jane); address Dover St, George a butcher. Bearing in mind that the two baptisms mentioned earlier in the thread (George 1830 and Thomas Frederick 1834) both show George as a butcher and the address as Dover Street, I wonder if the mother's name was written wrongly for Ann Jane's baptisms.

Similarly the younger Henrietta Pickering in that grave has mother's maiden name Ross, according to the GRO birth registration entry
