« on: Thursday 25 January 24 08:45 GMT (UK) »
WOULD ANYONE HAVE INFORMATION ON John Howard and his ancestors/connections he was born 1835 of Mathew and Margaret Howard his NSW birth entry at bdm reads district LD, I was led to believe he was born in Maitland.

Married Susannah Hansell my great grandmother, who in turn had Nessie Ellen Howard born 1876 my Grandmother.  Any information on John and his ancestors would be greatly appreciated.

If you have access to Ancestry.com.au (possibly at a library) there is a great deal of information on this family including family trees. Trove.nla.gov.au is a free source of newspapers and you may find information there.

Civil registration started in 1856 in NSW so the record you see is a church baptism, not a birth. The codes are here, LD is St Mary's Catholic Church, Sydney.  The baptism may have been done by a priest doing his circuit rounds so you would have to see the actual record to know where the baptism took place.

Hi again Debra

The only information I have on John is that he married Susannah Hansell in 1864 as per bdm, also according to bdm he was born of Margaret/Mary and Mathew Howard (no information on them at all) in Sydney I cannot find any further information on his death but according to bdm it was 1899 in Sydney.

I have birth certificate for my grandmother Nessie (who died before I was born, so no info from her directly). On the certificate Nessie Ellen Howard -  Father's name John Howard of Maitland Mother Susan Hansell birthplace Sydney.

Nessie was born according to the certificate 21/06/1876 "Arthur Place" Kent St Sydney

As per your reply am thinking John was actually born in Maitland and Baptised in Sydney, interesting RC as I was unaware of any Roman Catholics on my mothers side, I am stumped on finding anything else, have visited find a grave, trove, NSW family history I have information on Susannah.

The man who died in 1899 was the brother of Bridget HOWARD who was married to Thomas MULQUEENY.  They were from Ireland and their parents were Matthew HOWARD and Mary RYAN/RUHINE.    This John married Bridget HARRISON in 1869 and their only surviving daughter married George WINTER.

The two baptisms to Matthew and Margaret HOWARD appear in the Army birth indexes on FindMyPast.

John HOWARD, 1835, Sydney, Australia, REG1, Gro Regimental Birth Indices (1761 To 1924)

Thomas HOWARD, 1833, Sydney, Australia, REG1, Gro Regimental Birth Indices (1761 To 1924)

I would be more inclined to look at James HOWARD and Margaret McKENNAN who arrived from Ireland on the Garrow in 1839.  They had a son named John with them who they said was aged 2 years in July 1838.  This John's siblings were born in Maitland so he might have thought that he was too.

They had a daughter named 'Nessy H.' in 1854 and she used the name 'Nessie Ellen'.
