Irish ancestors burial place co roscommon , co galwey
« on: Monday 29 January 24 05:00 GMT (UK) »
i have been on numerous sights trying to find the burial place of ancestors - Malachy Fallon b 1819 d 1884 Malachy was a farmer at Ballyglass and married to Bridget Mulligan.(1816 -1896) they had six children : Catherine, Brigidam, John, Malechiam, Michalem, Patrick. Does anyone have any information on cemetries for these people please? I will be travelling to Ireland this year and would love to visit their resting place.

It looks like you are using the Latinized names of the children- perhaps you got their details from baptismal records? If so, which church?

Usually it was only the Church of Ireland that kept burial registers although you may get lucky. However, it's possible that the family didn't have the means or inclination to erect a headstone.

Hello SHRYL
Did your Malachy Sr. have a brother Michael who married Mary Haggart in 1848?
Sorry, I can't send you a private message yet since you have only posted once.

I am just wondering if any died in the famine, if so burial would be difficult, people were so weak they could not dig graves.
If far from a church or someone who could write a death and burial would perhaps go unrecorded
Some families died in their little cabins when because of rent arrears they had to remove the roof on the orders of the absentee landlords whose Land Agents made sure that was done .
People stole back at night and just lay down in the roofless cabins and died ,
whole families and to this day,I am told ,the remains of those little houses are now just a grassy bump in a field but are family graves.
Memories fade after a few generations and anything not written will eventually be lost.
Viktoria.

Civil registration of deaths in Ireland didn't start until many years after the Famine (1864), most churches, except the Church of Ireland, didn't keep burial records and many families didn't have the means to put up headstones. These are the main reasons it can be difficult to find death details of burial places even when you know the exact church.

Many thanks for all your assistance. i have visited all links in the chat and still can't find any burial place recorded for Malachy Fallon b 1819 -1884 having checked so many cemetries.  I will visit the Killinvoy cemetry when I travel there in June. Fingers crossed. and No to bevj , I don't believe Malachy had a brother Michael. Although I could have missed a sibling in my research. Again thank you everyone for your help. I will keep searching.
