Looking for work?
« on: Wednesday 07 February 24 11:38 GMT (UK) »
I'm wondering if anyone can give me inspiration, John Watts b1713 in Yardley Hastings (Northants)married Mary Atkins b1713 In Hillmorton,Rugby(warks) on the parish register it says he was from Long Buckby (Northants) In the absence of any baptisms anywhere that fit I'm thinking that John must have moved around for employment but I have absolutely no idea in what trade to start looking, shoes, textiles run favourably in the family. I know it's a long shot but.......................?

Hillmorton, Warwickshire is 7 miles NW of Long Buckby, Northamptonshire

Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire is 16 miles SE of Long Buckby, Northamptonshire
The place of baptism which you mention, his parents were Joseph  & Elizabeth

However there are several others of that name in the County around that time but he might have been baptised earlier?

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Hi Colin, thank you I have found others too I'm interested in finding out possibly why he finished up in Hillmorton. This is the only line that fits all my other criteria.

I note their children were born in Hillmorton.

John 1737, Elizabeth 1739, Mary 1740, Sarah 1748, Thomas 1750.

Sadly the baptisms do not give any detail on occupations, which later records did.

If this is Mary Atkins below it suggests they did not follow the English naming pattern, this may make it more difficult to be clear on John. Movement between places in that period was not uncommon, especially if the were involved in agriculture, land owners would move people around.

Mother   Ann Atkins
Father   Thomas Atkins
Birth   14 Jun 1713
Baptism   28 Jun 1713 Hillmorton, Warwickshire, England

A John Watts probate is listed on Ancestry but only that below?
Record Type   Probate
Death Date   Abt 1768
Death Place   Hillmorton, Warwickshire, England
Probate Year   1768

Jno Watts   Burial   30 Aug 1768   Hillmorton

Colin
Perhaps you could post the criteria linking John to Yardley Hastings.

Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Hi Libby56

This maybe the answer!
If John Watts was an "Ag lab" agricultural labourer ?
They moved around a great deal during their working lives.
Just a thought.

Regards Tom.

Thanks Tom...it crossed my mind as another branch of the family, only slightly connected were all Ag lab and they all were in and around Hillmorton/Rugby
Sometimes I wish the family name was Crinklebottom or something else equally rare!

Why not try looking for any Settlement cert or Removal orders?  Some places have a better survival rate than others, but you may be lucky.   You couldn't just move around the country willy nilly.  Some information here may be helpful:
