Now just to find the problem of my grandad Walter

As you seem to be aware, Walter has a CR 10 card [1918-1921] with his id photo in the Fourth Register of Seamen. There appear to be no other MN records online for him. He joined ss HARRY CASPER in December 1918 so I would suggest you obtain the Crew Agreement for that ship which is held at the Maritime History Archive in Canada. The CA will usually tell you what his previous ship was and with a bit of luck you may be able to use that method to backtrack his service presuming of course that his previous service was in the Merchant Navy. Happy to give you contact details/direction if required.

Hi Hugh, that would be great, thank you for the information on the ship also. I wasn't aware. In my original post I did mention I have no idea what I'm doing regarding Military research, so appreciate the time you have all taken to help me.

Hi Trish,
You can contact the Maritime History Archive in Canada as they have the 1919 Official Logbook/Crew Agreement for the ship HARALD CASPER official number 142754.

The contact details are
Maritime History Archive
Memorial University of Newfoundland
St. John's, NL
A1B 1T5
If you have a research question, contact us at: mhares@mun.ca

We know he joins her in December 1918 so you need to check that agreement and find him in the crew list it should show his previous ship. If you need digital copies of the agreement there will be a charge but the staff are quite helpful.
