(IUK) We have stumbled acrosWe hMystery in a grade II listed house!
« on: Wednesday 21 February 24 08:30 GMT (UK) »
We think it was built in 1835. It appears to have once been two houses that were turned in to one, but this has been hard to confirm. The challenge is that it makes it hard to determine who lived in which house at what time.

The house is named, not numbered. We started suspecting something when we noticed the houses on the terrace are numbered 1, 2, this house, 5, 6, etc. the facade of the house also resembles houses 1 and 2 in every way, except it has one central front door where they have two. It does appear to be an old door however. Inside there's two staircases. One has been described to us as the servants staircase, but it's really little different in size or style to the other staircase. There appear to have been alterations over the years to box in some sections, but the woodwork that's still there is the same style.

The census hasn't helped here. It sometimes says the house name, other times number 3, and one time we found it described as "3-4" in 1911, suggesting if it was turned in to one house it happened before then.

We're wondering how to confirm this, for example would they have needed to submit building plans for the work in this era.

What area of what country are you talking about?

Maybe a visit to the archival records of your local council (or whatever your local body is called) would be a good place to start.

Thanks Wiggy, we'll have a little trip to the Winchester archives.

Bear in mind that planning permission wouldn’t have been required to convert two houses into one (assuming the conversion took place after 1947). Building Regulation approval may have been required but these are not public documents which you are entitled to view.

The OS surveyed a 1:500 town plan in Winchester in 1869/70 and then 1:2500 revisions in 1894, 1908, 1931.
They may help to narrow down the date of conversion.  Also try directories and rate books at the Archives.

If this house is in the same street that you enquired about in your other thread, it seems likely that the conversion was carried out on behalf of Alfred Edmeades. As far as I can see, before 1901 there is nothing unusual about the house numbering in St James Terrace, but in 1901 numbers 3 and 4 have disappeared and 'Hazel Mount' has appeared, with Alfred Edmeades, retired brewery manager, the resident.

Alfred Edmeades must have moved out before 1911 and indeed he gives his address as "Maymyo, Winchester" in a 1912 letter to a newspaper. He went on to serve as the Mayor of Winchester during World War I.

I found this when searching for articles that mention Hazel Mount.

16 July 1898, Hampshire Chronicle

Quote
GOLDEN WEDDING
EDMEADES-SMITH.–May 14th, 1857, at Westbury, Tasmania, by Rev. Joseph Fillingham, Alfred Edmeades to Rebecca Smith.

"Mid smiles and tears for fifty years,
We've travelled side by side"

Present Address–
Hazel Mount, Winchester.

I've lived in my current home for over forty years.   The place is an end of terrace cottage which we bought from a coffin maker whose workshop was downstairs with an apartment upstairs, in which two old ladies had lived..

The owner of the coffin business also owned the next door property, which consisted of one room downstairs and one room upstairs.  Access to a toilet was via a passage to the outside yard.

Our mortgage company would not lend us any money on the building with so many door ways. in case we secretly let out some rooms.  This meant bricking up two doorways , which left the property with one doorway at the rear of the property and one front door.
