James WALBRIDGE (WALLBRIDGE)

Please can anyone help me with the search for the baptism of my 4x Great Grandfather James Walbridge. He was born around 1766 in Compton Abbas parish (also known as Wynford Eagle or West Compton!), but I have failed so far to find any record to give me his fathers name. He was married to Mary Hawkins in Feb 1793 and is buried in West Compton churchyard having died on 24th Dec 1839 aged 73. I am really stuck with him, and any help gratefully received.

You may not know that a lot of the Compton Abbas records are online: http://www.dorset-opc.com/ComptonAbbas.htm
At the moment the baptisms only go back to 1813, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time....
It is probably worth contacting Susan Stead the opc (see page).
(You probably knew that James W left a PCC will).

Thanks for the info. Wrong Compton Abbas I think! The parish is known as West Compton, but thanks anyway. I have managed to get a bit further back now. Helen

I too are trying to find birth details for my 4 x great grand father James Walbridge born 1766/1767.
Maybe we can establish contact with each other to help further our research into the Walbridge name in and around Powerstock Dorset.

Just to add to the information she has given on the marriage of James the witnesses were Thomas Walbridge and Richard Hansford
