Cleary Family from Mayo
« on: Monday 08 April 24 16:04 BST (UK) »
Hi

Just looking for some advice on finding any information on a Patrick Cleary, born in Lettermaghera, Newport, County Mayo on the 30th April 1872.
His parents were John Cleary and Mary Kilroy who had married on the 9th February 1866.
John was 30 years old, and named his father as Dominick Cleary, and Mary was 20 years old and named her father as Michael Kilroy.

Patrick's siblings - Mary, born on the 24th March 1867, Michael, born on the 25th September 1868, John, born on the 26th April 1870, Dominick born and died in 1876, and possibly another sister, Mary, born on the 23rd September 1877.

I know that Michael emigrated to Ohio and Patrick came over to England.

However, because of the lack of Irish census returns prior to 1901 - I'm not sure what happened to the family during the latter part of the 19th century.

In particular, we believe that the family had connections with the TreanLaur Hunting Lodge in Mayo, one of Patrick's daughters, Mary, born in Hull in 1903, gave that name to her house, but haven't found any evidence of how.

I think John Cleary (Patrick's father) may have died in 1923 - John Cleary born c1837 died in Westport, Mayo September quarter, aged 86 years.
Mary Cleary born c 1846 (nee Kilroy) may have died either 1921 or 1922 in either Claremorris, Mayo, 1921, aged 75 years, or in Westport, Mayo in 1922, aged 75 years.
However, if this was the case, why can't I trace them in 1901 or 1911?  ??? ???

Any assistance gratefully accepted!!

Sue

Could this be the father John in 1901 living alone, a widower.

The age is given as only 60 but on his death in 1902 it's 70, given that people were often not sure of their ages.

A Michael Cleary (possible the brother on the death cert) died in 1908 wife Catherine

So this would be her on the Cleary farm in 1911

Mary 1877
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1877/02984/2093413.pdf
Family Search have them down as Newport Tipperary, and Patrick in Argentina,  the things they do!!!!
Mary 1867
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1867/03493/2284064.pdf
so did the first Mary die or could one of the Mary's be Mary Bridget known as Bridget.
I don't see a Bridget to go with that John death.

This is fantastic information!  Away from laptop at the moment but will have a thorough look tomorrow!

But many thanks! This Irish family history is a nightmare isn't it!

In Griffith's Valuation Dominick Cleary is in Lettermaghera North not South (as in the Census I found), the Kilroy's are also there, not in Furnace. Not sure why that would be. Also Dominick appears to be sharing his land with Mary Higgins. Print date 1855.

There is a death of a Dominick Cleary in 1883 son John informant, but have a look at the death above it, Ellen Cleary son John informant.
Ellen died 15 April and Dominick the 16th.

It's really not fair to call Irish family history a nightmare when, in a very short amount of time, information (all of which is online free) has been found for you and there's still lots more you should be able to find.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I do apologise sincerely.
I just meant in comparison to searching for other records where more material is available to help piece together all the evidence

Many apologies
