Maria Clough, b1819 Manchester

Hi,

Maria Clough was my husband's 2xgreat grandmother born in Manchester.

In 1840 she married Richard Lomas, both full age, both living at Alport, Manchester.  Her father's name was Elisha Clough, a carter.

In the '41 Richard's age is given as 25 and Maria's 20.  They have Elizabeth a 9 month old daughter.  In the '51 she gives her age as 32, born in Manchester.  She now has a son, John as well as Elizabeth (although John's age is 6 and Elizabeth is 2 - maybe the first Elizabeth died?).  In the '61 her age is 42 and says born in Manchester so her age is consistent.

Who is Elisha, her father?  I can't find him and I can't find her mother.  Can anyone help?

This does look tricky
I've checked the maiden name for the children and it looks like Richard Lomas has two wives called Maria.
His second marriage is in Dec qtr 1849 to a Maria Hindle at Sculcoates.
So the 1851 census does not count.

Like you I'm struggling to find an Elisha Clough carter.
There is an Elisha Clough over at Harewood farmer born 1795 who married Jane Smith 10.8.1819 at Leeds.No sign of a daughter Maria though.

Yes it is odd.

I've only found one Elisha Clough who was baptised 1795 in Leeds, then married Jane Smith in 1819 in Leeds.  He died in 1865 in Chapel Allerton, Yorkshire.

There appears to be a number of children born to the above:

William Benjamin, 14.5.1820
John, 11.12.1821
George, 13.9.1825
Sarah, 10.9.1827
Jane, 19.1.1832 all Harewood.

Then a few more random births ...

I've got to go out but will pick up again in a couple of hours.

'71 in Staley, born Manchester
'81 in Staley/Dukinfield, born Manchester and now a widow.

There's a death of a Maria Lomas in 1886 Q4 in Ashton (shows birth date as 1819).

I'm at a loss ...

Aaahhhh ...

To correct myself Richard and Maria are 3xgreat grandparents.
His 2xgreat grandfather was Isaac Lomas born 1857

so assuming our Maria Clough died in 1843 then Maria Hindle is who I should be looking for.
