Possible marriage for Thomas here, taking place in Ballyeaston in 1857:

Thomas is 21, a blacksmith, and a Presbyterian. His father is James, a farmer.
Agnes Armstrong is his wife.

People on Anc* seem to believe that this Thomas moved to Dalry in Scotland, so perhaps he is not the father of your James. The Dalry Thomas was indeed a blacksmith, so I'm not really sure. Dalry Thomas married an Agnes McGooken in Dalry in 1859, but these trees claim that she was his second wife, after the first Agnes (Armstrong) died?

I'm afraid I know absolutely nothing about Scottish research, so I can neither confirm nor deny. Maybe ignore this suggestion for now, unless more concrete evidence is found.

I wonder if there is a clue in James' residence at the time he married, Ballyrickardmore in Raboo? There are a few McGookins there in the 1901 census.

Okay, I think maybe I have found more evidence to support this being incorrect.

We know from his marriage certificate to Agnes Armstrong that Thomas' residence was Lismenary (?) and that he was the son of James McGookin.

In 1894, the death of an 84-year-old James McGookin of Lismenary was registered by Thomas McGookin, son of the deceased with the same place of abode. Thomas cannot be in Scotland if he was in Antrim in 1894, so he could certainly be the father of your James.

The Will of James M'Gookin late of Lismenary County Antrim Farmer who died 6 August 1894 at same place was proved at Belfast by James M'Gookin of Lismenary Houston M'Gookin of Ballyrickmore and William M'Gookin of Lismenary all in said County Farmers the Executors.

Unfortunately, everything I'm finding is a little circumstantial. If only I could find the death registration of Thomas, who we know was alive in 1894.

Thomas and Agnes McGookin (Agnes's maiden names was also McGookin) look to have been in Dalry in Scotland from at least 1864 and the birth of their fourth child (Thomas).

By 1871 census, they are showing with 6 children (no James). One more child born in 1872.

They look to have married in Dalry in 1859:

James was not born till 1860-61? This Thomas and wife Agnes must have gone back to Ireland for the early years after their marriage as their eldest children, Elizabeth, Janet and Arthur look to have been born in Ireland in the early 1860s.

Thomas died in 1907. Mother's maiden name given as Selliman.

The Thomas who married Agnes McGookin in Dalry in 1859 does show as a widower...

Could James have been born to first wife Agnes Armstrong? Birth some time between marriage to Agnes Armstrong on 28 March 1857 and at some point before the death of Agnes Armstrong (latest by marriage date to Agnes McGookin in November 1859)? First born boy being called James after Thomas's father? Remaining in Ireland whilst his father headed off to Scotland for work and Thomas remarrying there to another Agnes (second cousin) and making his life in Ayrshire?

I've found several instances over the years where a person registering a death in Ireland, often parent or sibling's death, gives their residence as the townland where the family lived rather than their current residence.
