Ancestry Compare DNA Communities
« on: Wednesday 15 May 24 12:16 BST (UK) »

Is this in anyway useful for identifying connections please?  Forgive my ignorance.  I have a handful of people who are shared mystery matches and all come under the Devon and Cornwall community box but none of them have those areas in their trees.  In fact one match has a totally eastern european tree hence my confusion.

Limited value at best in my experience as it's based on where people are living (or claim to be), based on their profile information.  I have matches covering three generations of a family as far apart as Aberdeen, Kent and Cornwall, it's only by building their trees I know they are related and were all born in Sheffield from around 1950-2005.
That's not to say it is entirely useless but it would take a lot of luck to find a family line with multiple testers who have adequate profile information, accurate trees and haven't moved far for many generations.

One of my Wife’s Grandfather’s was from Dorset, all his various lines going back as far as possible were from Dorset.

Her Communities and Admixture returns Zero Dorset results where by rights it should be about 25%.

You cannot rely on what Ancestry reports, simply take it as a rough and ready guide with a huge variation in accuracy.

Sort of like setting the Sat Nav in Manchester to take you to Edinburgh and it takes you there via London just because that is where most people start their journeys to Edinburgh from.

Thanks both.   ;D sometimes there's no logic to what I'm being told by these sites but I need to be sure I've not missed the point.

Have you looked at the ethnicity of the shared matches ?
This is different from the communities that they are classed into .

I would colour code this group of people for future reference especially if they are shared matches with each other .

Connections may be explained by a subsequent match .
