Edward Howlett born 1844-46 Ipswich Suffolk olk
« on: Monday 20 May 24 08:25 BST (UK) »
I have Edward Howlett born 1844-46, Ipswich Suffolk.
1911 census he lived Middleton West Hartlepool with his wife Mary, (maiden name Lee) , & family he was a retired grocer.
1901 census with Mary & children Middleton, grocer.
1891 lived Stranton West Hartlepool with wife Mary & children Grocer.
1881 He lived Stranton West Hartlepool with his wife Mary & children Grocer.
1871 living Stranton West Hartlepool with Mary & daughter Mary, he was a Seaman.
On the 1861 I find him at St Andrews Holborn Middlesex, he was a servant for Robert Lee, coffee shop keeper, the strange thing is Robert was married to Louisa her maiden name was Howlett, coincidence or related, it seems strange Edward is is a servant there, I can't find a trace of him before the 1861 census, hope this isn't to long

Have you looked at Edward Thomas Howlett, birth registered 4Q1842, apparently illegitimate, baptised  at St Clement, Ipswich on 31 October 1847, mother Mary Ann Howlett?

Info only,

1861 census records Edward as being born in Norfolk.

Louisa Lee nee' Howlett c1821 was born Barford,Norfolk. Parents Thomas & Honor, occupation Blacksmith,

There's a Marianne Howlett born baptised 1823 Norwich with same parents and father's occupation.

Wonder if Louisa took in Edward.

1850 Ipswich - Mary Ann Howlett married John J S Morely

1851 census Ipswich, st Clement
John Morley 28 seaman born Essex
mary Ann Morely 27 wife born Ipswich
Edward Morely 9 son, born Ipswich

Mary Ann goes on to have a number of children with John Morley, but her son Edward does not appear with her in future census.
By the 1871 census she is with her family in Stranton, West Hartlepool. (I see this coincides with her son Edward)
In the 1901 census she is living with her son, Henry John Morley, in Hartlepool. She died there in 1905.

That's very interesting thank you, Louisa may have taken Edward on, the other strange thing was Edwards mother's maiden name was Lee, although that maybe coincidence, Lee is not an uncommon name.

Edward’s mother’s maiden name was Howlett.
His wife’s maiden name was Lee.
I am not sure what you mean by a coincidence. ??

Sorry I meant his wife's maiden name, I mean coincidence because on the 1861 census, he was a servant, for Robert Lee, in middlesex, maybe Mary Ann ( Lee) Edwards wife, her father & Robert Lee were brothers, like Edwards father & Louisa were siblings, confusing I know, I hope that makes sense.

Robert lee was born about 1817 according to age at death. His marriage record is on Ancestry, his father was also called Robert and was also a carpenter.
Baptism in Barford 15 Jun 1817 Robert s/o Robert and Sarah (occ carpenter) seems to fit.
Mary Ann Lee (wife of Edward) was born in Fakenham according to censuses - over 20 miles from Barford.
