William Dudd b 1784, lived Bristol Glos
« on: Monday 20 May 24 18:29 BST (UK) »
Hello.

I am looking for any useful information regarding my 4th maternal great grandfather side of my maternal grandfather, William Dudd, also known as Henry Dudd.  What I know so far is that he was born around 1784, was listed on certain documents as a sailor or naval officer.  I found a record of him in an Irish Freemasonry archive, in which he was said to be living in Detpford at the time.  Which seems logical, given the shipyards and boat anchorages.  If I am not mistaken, he was married 3 times in Bristol, Gloucestershire, the 3rd wife being my ancestor.  The second, Ann Edmunds, married him in 1811, and he remarried less than 5 years later.  I have only found 1 Ann Edmunds who died in the correct period, and she would have been Ann Edmonds, older than him, a native of Jamaica.  I also found a William Dudd who buried his wife Mary in Bristol in 1811, this one born in 1748. Non-conformist.  I come to you because not only do I not find any William Dudd father, or son, in the births, but in my myheritage DNA results, or FTdna, there is no dudd no Dadd no Didd, very few Judds,  the Budds come from Devon through my maternal grandmother.  And as you might expect, I have a lot of Dodds, but none from the west of England.  Also, I have unexplained Anglo-American matches for the name Dudley, and all go back to a Dudley branch that migrated to Gloucestershire before leaving for the USA.  I really need help.

Thank you to all of you.  Jessica

I suspect you may have been looking at several different men with similar names. As you don't give much specific detail in your post, it is difficult to follow what information you have.

The William Dudd who married Hester Lloyd in Bristol in 1815 was a bachelor. He also signed his name.
I can see they have several children: Henry, William, Frederick, Mary Ann in Clifton/Bristol. The father is described as a sailor and waterman on their baptisms.
The father William died in 1840 in Clifton.

The William Dudd who married Ann Edmunds in 1811 did not sign his name, so I think he is a different man.
You don't say what the first marriage you found was - so perhaps look at that again.

I think you need to take a step back and reassess.

Are you descended from William Dudd and Hester Lloyd? Which child is your direct ancestor?

Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

There's an 1838 naval pension record for a William Collins or Dudd aged 60. Born Canterbury, lived in Walmer, last ship Namur, wounded in right arm

Hello, and thank you for your reply.

Yes, I descend from Hester Lloyd and William, through his son William, and Elizabeth Insall, who had Annie Maria, who married Thomas Sherborne Dymock, father of Jasper Edmund ( who also used John Thomas in his military career). Jasper married Rose Veronica Shutt, and had my grandad, Peter Mervyn Dymock.

It's funny you mentionned William did not sign, because I actually found this ( see attached image). Given that he was born in 1784, he would have been 26 years old.

Ann Edmunds litterally disappears off the radar. It's as if she had never existed.

There is also another William Dudd in Bristol, but born 1746, who buried a wife in Bristol in 1811. Could they be related ?

Thanks, jessica

Hi Jessica  (Welcome to RootsChat)
The image of the marriage record that you have attached for William Dudd and Ann Edmunds shows that both bride and groom did not sign their names.
You will see it has been signed by the minister on their behalf; it says mark of “X” William Dudd and mark of X Ann Edmunds. They made their mark with “X”, because they were illiterate.

William Dudd who married Hester Lloyd in Bristol in 1815 was a bachelor when he married. He also was able to sign his name.

I don’t believe they are the same man.

Posting an interesting bit on his son Wm., your ancestor, in case you'd not seen it...You'll need to prove this for yourself. (They call him Sr...re: the Grocers’ Alliance that he established - see the bottles at bottom of page)
After first wife Elizabeth Insall died in 1853, William Jr. married another Elizabeth ( widow but used her maiden name?), dau. of Thomas Insall (altho looks to be Insell, banns show Lisek)) of Langton, Dorset, with whom he had two more children.

Wm. Senior's plot seems to be a shared one according the the results...Can't read the inscription for the life of me...but then it is pretty old & flat for weathering.

Perhaps the elder Wm. who'd lost his wife 1811, may have married again within the year...there's an elderly Ann working as a workhouse servant 1841 Clifton.

Not saying he's yours, but here is an interesting story of an illegitimate family (Tomlinson) who all used the last name of Dudley...One of them forenamed Dudd/Dud. (evil genius? Or not) He moved to Bristol and changed his last name once again after the civil war to Dr. Hunt...was still disputing ownership of land in 1657 Clifton...Not enough information available to prove/disprove anything, but it shows how names can be contrived to suit the plot, and the hurdle or complete blockade it can create to finding ancestors.

..... What I know so far is that he was born around 1784, ......

Where does his birth year come from?
I assume you have viewed the actual death certificate that confirms he was the husband of Hester Llyoyd, and not the "other / older" William Dudd.

Reading Jessica's first post again, she's looking for information on Wm. Sr. - wondering who his father might be, pointing out the existence of an older William who might be Sr.Sr. -  but the following marriage confusion refers to Wm Jr. oops, correcting, as obviously now I'm confused...

Wm. Sr.'s grave - & Esther appears to be on her own until she passes:
Wm. Senior's plot seems to be a shared one according the the results...Can't read the inscription for the life of me...but then it is pretty old & flat for weathering.
