Lingard Sheffield
« on: Wednesday 29 May 24 11:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I don’t know if anyone can help.
My second great grandfather is John Lingard born in Totley Derbyshire 1855 and died in Sheffield in 1930. He was married to a Sarah Ann Bottom born in Sheffield 1887 and she died in Sheffield in 1929.
I’m trying to find out John’s grandparents as there are contradictory records about this. His father was Thomas Lingard 1819 no birth place at present and died 1895 and his wife was Mary Deakin born in Totley 1820 and died in Sheffield 1887.
I keep getting prompted that Thomas’s parents were William Lingard of Tideswell 1770 - died Sheffield 1856 and Ann Platts of Staffordshire 1777 died Sheffield 1823.
I’m not sure this is correct.
Tideswell is a tiny village and was connected to a murder in 1815 by an Anthony Lingard. He was from a family in Litton in the parish of Tideswell. At present I’m not sure if this is the same family. Totley is on the edge of Sheffield and just a few miles from Tideswell. Could there have been two families in the same village with the same name?
Sorry this is confusing, it’s the one aspect of my family tree that has me muddled.
Hope someone can help, thank you  :)

Hello JilRoz and welcome to RootsChat.

Marriage in 1874 to Sarah Bottom would give father’s name and occupation, and confirm details for you.

The census shows John Lingard’s place of birth as Sheffield

In the 1871 census and the 1861 census
John Lingard is with his parents (Thomas and Mary) and siblings in Sheffield.
John worked as a scissor smith which is the same occupation as his father Thomas

There is a baptism 28 Dec 1818 in Sheffield for Thomas Lingard, son of William and Ann Lingard.  Thomas was born 1818-11-03.
(William’s occupation is cutler).

I can see a son named James Lingard was born in 1817 Sheffield to the same parents.

Thank you Neale61 that’s amazing. This family tree stuff is kind of addictive isn’t it?
I’m pretty new to this but once you start….. :)
So now with all these new names I will try and see if there is a link to Anthony Lingard, he was hung in chains in 1815 and was the last man to be gibbeted in Derbyshire.
Thank you 🙏
