Finding birth records in Altona
« on: Monday 03 June 24 20:08 BST (UK) »
I am trying t find a birth register for my great grandfather Samuel F Keating who appears to have been born in Altona when it was part of Denmark.  He was born in 1854 of Irish parents.  I do not know why he was born in Altona.  the census records for him vary. some say Cork, some say Altona Hamburg.  In the 1921 census he put Denmark.  I am really struggling to think where to go next to locate his birth certificate.  Any suggestions?

Hello there,

I research in this part of Denmark as some of my ancestors come from this region. I use a database called archion.de which is based in Germany. I looked at the indexes for the parish registers of Altona Hamburg. I was able to locate no Samuel Keating.
- Kiernan from County Meath
- Kelly from County Kildare
- Donnelly from County Tyrone
- McKenna from County Tyrone/Moghanan

The census records for him vary. some say Cork, some say Altona Hamburg.  In the 1921 census he put Denmark.

The 1891 census has his birthplace as Guernsey, Channel Islands. Have you checked for a CI birth?

What was the occupation of his father? Was he also a commercial traveller?

Do you have Samuel's 1880 marriage cert?

I think the enumerator must have misread Germany for Guernsey as no other mention of CI anywhere else.

Thanks, yes I do have that.  I have found a marriage certificate for his daughter and she puts her nationality as Irish, even though she was born in England!
