James Henry and family based in New York
« on: Friday 07 June 24 13:45 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone can help fill in some of the gaps in my family tree for my Great Great Grandfather James Henry. Here is the information I have at the moment, I have underlined the pieces Iím still trying to find.

James Henry
Birth: ??? Est. 1860, Ireland
Arrival to New York from Ireland: ???
Known Residence: New York between 1888 - 1896 (According to daughters births)
Marriage: Mary Welsh
Marriage Place: ??? Ireland or New York?
Occupations: Groom, Coachman
Died: ??? 1896 / 1897 New York?

I have traced his wife Mary Welsh and their children (who were born in New York) from when they show up in Scotland in 1901 when Mary Welsh re-married and they are listed as step daughters that were born in New York listed below:

Scotland Census 1901 - Mary (MS: Welsh) Dougall
In Wishaw, Cambusnethan, Lanark

James Dougall 44 (Head)
Mary (MS:Welsh) Dougall 30 (Wife)
Thomas Dougall 14 (Son)
Fanny Henry 14 (Step-Daughter) (Born: New York, USA)
Annie Henry 10 (Step-Daughter) (Born: New York, USA)
Mary Henry 6 (Step-Daughter) (Born: New York, USA)
James H Dougall 2 (Son)

I canít seem to find Fanny Henry or Mary Henrys US birth certificate on the NYC Historical Vital Records site (I have reached out to them to search) but James Henrys name shows up as the father in the death/marriage records of these children in Scotland.

Both parents are Irish and I have traced Mary Welsh back to being born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland but I do not know where in Ireland James was born. His occupation is also listed as a Coachman in these records.

I found more details about him from the US birth certificate I did find of his daughter Annie Henry in Manhattan, New York which I have transcribed and attached below.

Hereís is the info I have on his children born in New York:

Fanny Henry (My great grandmother)
Born: 29 Nov 1888, New York, Borough: ??? Possibly Manhattan
Birth date found in death cert. in Scotland, US birth cert not found although several sources mark born New York (Scotland census and poor law records)

Annie Henry
Born: 26 Sep 1890
Manhattan, New York City, USA
Place of Birth: 316 E. 44th Street (Manhattan)
Father: James Henry, Age: 30 Occupation: Groom (Coachman)
Mother: Mary Welsh, Age: 21
Birthplace of parents: Ireland
Number of Child Living of Mother: 2

Mary Henry
Born: 4 Jan 1896, New York, Borough: ??? Possibly Manhattan
Date found on a headstone in Ontario, immigrated to Canada from Scotland and married William John Lampkin

I canít find a trace of him between his daughter Marys birth in 1896 and 1897 (When his wife remarried in Scotland) or any death records in Scotland so Iím not sure if he died within that year in the US.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking a look,
Kris

A small detail I would like to add: I think James Henry's occupation in 1890 was "Groom" which would be in keeping with a Coachman.

This might be worth noting. The ages of the couple are very similar to yours.

This marriage took place in Michigan, 1887.

Thanks AnnaBme that makes a lot more sense, I've updated the original post.

Thanks Heywood, a lot of those details do line up. I have Mary Welsh's sisters birth certificate and she was born in Ballycastle so that may check out, having a look through it all now.

A few things about NY City records:

- Their birth records can be spotty from that era.  Some people just didn't bother to register births, and some religions encouraged their parishioners not to do civil registration of births or marriages.  I'm guessing these folks were not Catholic, but if they were, findmypast.com has NY baptism records and is free this weekend.

-The NYC Historical Vital Records site is a work in progress, can be challenging to search on, and sometimes things are mistranscribed or just not there.  Currently, it has no Manhattan deaths from 1876 to 1919.  Unless you've paid money for a search, I wouldn't expect much assistance from them.

-There are various places that you can look for NYC birth & death records.  I would recommend searching any of the following with as little information as possible if you haven't already done so.  Death indexes - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2240477  https://www.italiangen.org/death-records-nyc-muncipal-archives/  Birth indexes - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/3154699  https://www.italiangen.org/databases/search/?db=nycbirths  If you have an exact birth date for any of the daughters from later information, you might want to search just by last name.

- There's also a geographic birth index that lists the names of people born by residential address.  https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/3023263?availability=Family%20History%20Library  If you know where they were living, that might help, but it can involve scrolling through a lot.

This may be James' death - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2W6G-BXN  Hostler seems to fit with the horse-related occupations, and the address is also on 44th St.  The cemetery will take genealogical requests - https://www.theevergreenscemetery.org/genealogical-requests

If the above death is James, there was a mention of a James Henry who died in Presbyterian hospital in an article from 12 Aug. 1896 that listed a number of deaths related to the heat and humidity.  https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-standard-union/148885125/

Thanks so much Shellyesq, it looks like that is the correct death certificate with all the info that matches up. I'll get in touch with the cemetery thank you for that link.

I have paid for a search for Fanny Henrys birth certificate with the NYC Historical Vital Records as she was my great grandmother but that was a few weeks ago and I haven't had a response yet.

All of the records of James' wife and children are marked as Protestant in Scotland so I don't think James was Catholic.

I'll have a look through those links with the daughters date of births, it can be really tricky with spellings/transcriptions. I have seen Henry spelled Hendry on a few occasions and Welsh has been Walsh and Welch. Fanny has been Fannie and Frances too.
