Susannah BROOKING 1809-??
« on: Monday 10 June 24 12:34 BST (UK) »
Susannah PERRY was born 15 Feb 1809 at St George in the East.

On 5 April 1839 at St Pancras Church she married James BROOKING. James was born c1810 at Buckland in Devon.

They are in Stepney in 1841. James dies 11 Sep 1849 at the Queen's Prison, Borough Road, Southwark. Borough Road, Southward is the address given on his probate from 1862. He was a doctor and I believe he was the doctor at the prison rather than a prisoner.

In his probate everything was left to his sister Sarah Julia SNELL of Plymouth. No mention of his wife.

Trying to find what happened to Susannah. Can't find her in 1851, and no marriages after 1849 look suitable. Not sure if she is the Susan BROOKING buried at St Pancras in 1854 as she was in the Workhouse. The age of 44 would fit though.

Thanks

She probably died in the workhouse infirmary as a patient rather than as an inmate, so it would not be an unusual place to find a death.

There's a Susan in Clerkenwell in 1851
Brookyn on findmypast/familysearch, Brookins on ancestry
Age 44. Surgeon's Widow.
Born Bishop's Stortford (there are several Susan/nah Perry baptisms there at the relevant time)

Thanks.

Managed to sight the census image, which does look to be her going on the first part of the occupation - Surgeon's widow. Not sure about the second part - EIC Annuitant. As far as I am aware James BROOKING was not in India. One of his brothers was, and a sister.

The other thing that raises another question is she had a daughter Caroline with her aged 22, born London. If it is the right Susan then that is not James BROOKING's daughter.

Quite a few of the Devon BROOKINGs in this lot were Royal Navy officers, or went into the medical profession. Two of James' brothers were surgeons, one was a surgeon dentist and the other in the RN.

Possible that Susan was the widow of another BROOKING who was a surgeon in India.

Some more digging is required I think.

The administration( not a  probate, ie no will) in 1862 to his sister, might mean that Susannah has recently died and then they had to tidy up the affairs. I would think if Susannah was still alive, then the sister wouldn’t have been able to get administration.

Is this James with brother Benjamin?

Yes it is. Benjamin and his new wife left in Nov 1849 for South Africa, not long after James died.

There are a number of records with the burial of Susan Brooking at St Pancras Chapel  - either on 30 or 31 March 1854. Age not always recorded, but where it is it's 44 - and place of death is the women's infirmary

Added - she seems to have been in the workhouse and discharged herself on 28 March
