What search tools do you use? Ancestry, FindMyPast, Family Search?
How much research on him have you done so far?

The 1939 Register and/or a marriage cert should give you his occupation.

www.freebmd shows a birth in Wigan 1910

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp  shows his mothers maiden name was Beesley

Freebmd shows a 1902 marriage - Matthew Mathews & Jane Beesley

Use freebmd to find a marriage for Thomas then the 1939 register to find his occupation at that time

All censuses from 1841-1911 are free to search here

If you are wanting info re employment - the only way you will get that is by buying copies of  his marriage cert/his death cert & viewing the 1939 register entry.  No censuses after 1921

his father, Matthew Matthews, was 40 and his mother, Jane Beesley, was 34.

He is on the 1939 register in Wigan but we are not allowed to post info from it that can only be obtained via subscription.  Address & occupation plus other residents are only available by buying a sub to either Ancestry or FindMyPast

Your local library will probably have free access to Ancestry

www.freebmd.org.uk shows a marriage in Ince in 1938 to a Florrie Aspinall.  It's the only one in the Wigan area around that time

One child born 1941 - see freebmd.  Naming of possible living persons is not allowed by Rootschat

It looks as though Florrie may have died as the result of childbirth as there is a death for a Florrie Matthews b 1910 in 1941

There are 3 marriages for a Thomas Matthews in the Ince reg district - 1947/48/49 but no way of knowing if he remarried or which - if any - may be his.

1947 was at St Peters Bryn to Mary Olga Griffiths - b 1922 Wigan per freebmd & GRO online
1948 Christ Church Douglas? to Elizabeth Halton
1949 Christ Church Ince to Sarah Cassidy

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

There is a tree on Ancestry which confirms details re Florrie but shows no other marriage after her death

The 1939 register entry is shown on the tree
