Hitting a brick wall ... Looking for susan Ferris
« on: Wednesday 19 June 24 13:39 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone I am hoping some one on her will be able to give me some advice or point me in the right direction in regards to finding out information on my great-gran.
As far as what I have found out up until this point is alot of our family tree.
Where I am stumped is when it comes to where she was the 10 years before she died.

Her full name is Susan Fletcher Cosgrove or Ferris, She was born in 1894 in Kilmarnock, which is fine, I have found newspaper articles of information which may be triggering to some people, she was charged with attempted murder in 1926, when she tried to gas herself and her 5 children. In these articles it stated she was of unsound mind and unfit to stand trial it also stated that she suffered with fits of melancholia. I know she was sent to Duke Street Prison in Glasgow, but where it gets a bit confusing is on her birth certificate it states that she died in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and on the National probate index it states she was a general servant, although on her sons birth certificate it states she was a Mill Worker?

I know this is a lot of information and chances are slim that I will find out anything more than I already have but i figured it was worth a try.

Any help or advice would be so much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Do you mean her death cert?

Have you found her or any of her children or husband on the 1921 census?
What name was she using at time of death?

Exactly what type of info are you looking for?  In the 10yrs before she died - 6 were presumably in either prison or an asylum if she was convicted in 1926.

Birth 1894 is on SP & the 1901 census shows her parents as William & Maggie.

Tried & convicted 1926 - died 1932.  She may have been transferred to an asylum or prison  in Edinburgh during that period hence her death in Edinburgh.

I find it odd that somebody of unsound mind left a will?

Susan died intestate, so there was no will.

The probate index reads as follows:
FERRIS, Susan Fletcher Cosgrove or,  General Servant, 47 High Street, Kilmarnock,
died 1 July 1932 at Edinburgh, intestate.  Confirmation Kilmarnock, 18 August,
to John Ferris, Labourer, 38 Townholm, Kilmarnock, the husband.
                  Value of Estate, £32: 8: -.

The address given for Susan was the address of where the family was living in 1926.  However, John is at a new address at the time of her death.

Normally if someone dies in a hospital, the death registration would state that this is where the person died but would also include immediately after the deceased person's usual residence. What shows on her death registration?

What was the cause of death?
