Workhouse register
« on: Saturday 22 June 24 12:09 BST (UK) »
Whilst reading a Liverpool board of guardians workhouse register there is a column heading titled settlement and below this there is list of place names; Liverpool, Ireland, Scotland and many others. Are the places referred to where the inmates came from or where they are going to? Has anyone any knowledge of these books and can enlighten me please.

In poor-law terminology, the place of settlement is the parish/union that should have been paying for the upkeep of that person in the workhouse. It may not be where they immediately came from.

But sometimes in workhouse registers that column is ‘re-purposed’ and contains different information. So if you can post the details of the entry you’re looking at (name, date, etc.), those who have access to the image can take a look at it in context.
