I have looked at the online area where he died and married but there is no recorded information on either parents or where they came from or even an age. But I now am thinking that it may be oxfordshire.

Thanks

Unfortunately there won't be any family information on an SA marriage cert in 1845 and he would have to die after 1907 for a birthplace to be recorded.  There won't be any information about him on the children's birth certs either, it is just too early in South Australia.  You will however get his occupation and residence from the birth certs and that may help in tracking him down.

The online area I researched was the South Australia BDM. On the birth Registration online it states that the date of birth, mothers name and residence is for members only, and it is also stated that buying a certificate does not mean that you will get all this information. So he may remain a mystery.

John Harris - I live in Light Square

My name is John Harris ; I have been known as Foster ever since my father died; my father's name was Richard Harris ; Foster is my mother's name ; the debt was money lent at different times ; I entertain anyone; I have permanent female lodgers; I keep a brothel ; the prisoner frequently came to see a female there that he kept ; she paid me for her board and lodging weekly--not a part of her earnings ; they all pay me so much a week; I only charge by the week; my house is only used by females, who are regular lodgers ;

A possibility, but mother not Foster:-

There was a John Harris born on 30th August 1811, and baptised on 26th January 1812, in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, son of Richard Harris and Frances.

Other baptisms of siblings state that Richard was in the militia.

Richard Harris, serving in the Leicestershire Militia, married Frances Wheeler by licence on 8th March 1806 at St Mary de Castro, Leicester.
