Richard Hodgkiss and Mary Sutherton
« on: Saturday 29 June 24 19:54 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking for any information on 4 x greatparents Richard Hodgkiss born possibly about 1762 and Mary Sutherton born about the same time, both born in Shropshire. They married in Wellington, Shropshire 1793.  Mary's parents were Thomas Sutherton and Rachel Jones, but Richard's parents is where I'm struggling, it could potentially be Thomas Hodgkiss and Mary Badger or Richard Hodgkiss and Elizabeth.  Any advice you can give would be really appreciated.

I often find that, when struggling to break through a brick wall, it can prove useful to list all the names of the children, as they often provide clues as to the parents' parents. Often the eldest son is named after the father's father so I had a look and it seems as though his marriage to Mary was not his first.

On 23rd June 1783, Richard Hodgkiss married Elizabeth Franks at Wellington All Saints. On 18th October 1792, there is a burial of an Elizabeth Hodgkiss, aged 30 and this would be the right age for Richard's wife. Unfortunately, no marital status or husband's name is provided.

Then there is the marriage to your Mary at the same church in 1793. He signs by mark so no signature to compare but everything seems to line up.

I'm not sure exactly where you found an estimated birth year; do you have a burial record for him with an age at death? How do you know he was born in Shropshire?

Baptisms at All Saints of Hodgkiss children to a Richard & Elizabeth:
Samuel (1783), William (1786), Jane (1788), James (1790) and Ann (1792).

Then baptisms at All Saints of Hodgkiss children to a Richard & Mary:
Elizabeth (1794)

Then there seemed to be some at Madeley?
Ann (1795), Richard (1797)

Then back to Wellington?:
Sarah (1799)

Apologies if there are any mistakes in the above, but I am relying on the search function providing accurate results!

Then there was this interesting tidbit located at the Shropshire Archives:
"a) Richard Hotchkiss, resident in Madeley, furnaceman, says that he is about 36 and was born at Stafford. His mother says that he was a bastard child. About 13 years ago he married Elizabeth now deceased and had 2 children, Martha aged 11 and William, aged 10 and 3 years ago he married Mary and has 3 children: Ester aged 2.5, Elizabeth, 1.5 and Ann, 9 months. 21 Jun 1796."

Document Reference:
WB/H/1/1/3/9

I am thinking this must be the same man? The marriages line up, but the children do differ from my findings. William, Elizabeth and Ann fit in, but the others are a bit more of a mystery. What happened to their other children? Did they pass away?

Just wanted to share what I've found; perhaps others could add to it.

Queenie  :)

Hi thank you all for your response.
I have Esther on my tree at the illegitimate daughter of Mary Sutherton, Mary went onto to have 4 children (possibly more) with Richard Hodgkiss:
Richard Hodgkiss 1804 -1804
Hannah Hodgkiss 1805 - 1857
Jane Hodgkiss 1807 1873, she married Joseph Smith, they are my 3 Great grandparents, and Michael Hodgkiss 1810 - ?? all born in Tipton, Staffordshire, apart from Esther who was born in Wellington.
If anyone thinks this is incorrect please tell me, I'm considering disowning my ancestors.
Thank you again for taking the time and the trouble.

I was looking at the Bailey family with Mary Hodgkiss 1841.

There is a John Bailey who marries Hannah Hodgkiss 21 June 1830 at Little Wenlock.

This is not far from Madeley or Wellington.

Maria bap 12 June 1831 in Wellington of John and Hannah Bailey possibly their daughter. (Mary age 10

in 1841)

Also John Bailey bap 27 May 1838

Thank you to everyone for replying and taking the time and trouble, think I'm going to have to put it to one side and come back to it at a later date.
Printed off all replies for when I feel I can get my head round my ancestors.
Thank you again.
