How to name (in media) people with same name
« on: Wednesday 03 July 24 17:23 BST (UK) »
I have an uncle and a great uncle, both with the same name.

Of course I've put them in my 'Family Historian' program in their correct relationship places. But I'm wondering how to name the media jpgs that I've got of their Birth Registrations (to add to their Birth Facts).

I can't name both images "Joe Bloggs Birth Registration.jpg". Nor can I use Uncle and Great Uncle in the jpg name, because that's only in relation to me.

For now I've gone for "Joe Bloggs 1st Birth Registration.jpg" and "Joe Bloggs 2nd Birth Registration.jpg".

Is that how you do it?

No, mainly because in my tree its fairly likely that as I progress backwards/sideways from the direct line I'd find a good few more births for a child/children named Joe Bloggs :-)
For each person I'd add in the year of the event which makes it easier to differentiate.

I know n’owt about Family Historian software; I use Reunion, which allocates a reference number to each individual you enter. I preface the filename of every item of media with that reference number.

It’s not inconceivable that more distantly related people could have the same or a similar name.

Thanks everyone.

I'll go with adding the birth year to the image title.

Cheers.

I'll add my two cents, which is only slightly different.

I name births, marriages and deaths like this:

Birth BLOGGS Joe 1854.jpg
Birth BLOGGS Joe 1878.jpg

If I have two in the same year, but in different towns, I'll do:

Birth BLOGGS Joe 1854_in Jedburgh.jpg
Birth BLOGGS Joe 1854_in Hawick.jpg

If there are two in the same year and same town, I'll do:

Birth BLOGGS Joe 1854_son of Robert.jpg
Birth BLOGGS Joe 1854_son of William.jpg
England: Barnett; Beaumont; Christy; George; Holland; Parker; Pope; Salisbury
Scotland: Currie; Curror; Dobson; Muir; Oliver; Pryde; Turnbull; Wilson
Ireland: Carson; Colbert; Coy; Craig; McGlinchey; Riley; Rooney; Trotter; Waters/Watters

Thanks - more useful information.

Actually now I've realised that I've made a rookie mistake by naming my image files (for people) with their first name first.

Probably too late to go back now as I've linked quite a few images to the database records.

I've already had to backtrack a lot, having belatedly realised the benefits of Sources.

I'm beginning to feel like the people who are constantly reordering their book/CD/Vinyl collections!
