James Lawlor/Lawler or Dalton/Daulton
« on: Wednesday 10 July 24 00:38 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Looking for some help in locating my grandfather's roots. He moved to Scotland prior to 1921 as he is on the 1921 census as living in Renton, Dunbartonshire. The info he gave on the census lists his name as James Dalton, born around Jan/Feb 1890 in New Ross, Waterford. We know there is a connection to the name Lawlor/Lawler as he gave my dad it as a middle name and insisted my brother had it too. My mum recalls the family discussing thoughts that Lawler/Lawlor was in fact his surname. Not sure why he would change, I'm sure there could be a multitude of reasons for a name change at this time.
My dad gave the information for his death certificate (1970, I was just born) and my mum has told me that they did not know his age and had scant info to complete it. The death certificate gives his father's name as Patrick Dalton (farmer) and mother, Mary Dalton nee Dalton. Also his age is 10 years older than given on the census.
I searched the name James Dalton, which is very common, but came up a blank so I then turned to James Lawler/Lawlor and managed to locate a James Lawler born in January 1890 in New Ross to a Patrick Lawler and a Mary Lawler (nee Dalton), I also found a marriage between a Patrick Lawler/or and a Mary Daulton in 1868 in New Ross. I can't find them on any census though.
I've been linked through dna to a couple of 3rd/4th cousins who I think are from this line as Dalton/Lawlor appear on their trees 4/5 generations ago.
Any help/info would be greatfully received!

Thanks for that, Borris definitely is in the area I believe them to be from. I’ll have a look.  :)

Address Cournellan
It appears the mother Mary died 1892 son Patrick informant

This looks like the family in the census but no James with them

As the mother died perhaps he was cared for by a relative.

Does any of this fit with the DNA matches trees?

Thanks so much for taking the time to help. I saw that birth certificate but not the others. Interesting it is a son Patrick informing but not on the census and James missing too. The names Dalton and Lawler are so common in the area and the Christian names I’m looking for too.  :'(
DNA results all seem to be links through the Dalton name but not a lot of helpful info through trees. There are connections in NY area which makes sense as the boats departed from New Ross. The names Michael Dalton (emigrated and married in USA)(married another Irish immigrant Margaret McGiluire and had daughter Helen Dalton (Robbins married name) and a Bridget Dalton have appeared on trees with and links but I’ve not managed to glean anything further from them.
It’s an interesting puzzle.
Thanks again!

I think there could be two Patrick Lawlor and Mary Dalton couples.
On the James birth Patrick is a Labourer on the Stephen birth (and another I can’t remember just now) Patrick is a shopkeeper.

He could of course have lost the shop but a need to thread carefully.

Another possible couple
Sarah 1870 Patrick is a farmer

John 1871 a Shopkeeper

Catherine 1876 a Shopkeeper

Thank you for taking the time to look.  :)
This is why I always get in a tangle as there are so many!
I’m linked through dna to a 3rd cousin (so likely great, great grandparents in common). Looking at their tree - the great, great grandparent is a Michael dalton 1805-61 married to an Ellen Ryan 1810-1900 Ballymurphy. They do have a daughter Mary listed on the tree but no sources. Mary’s siblings are listed as John, Gerald and Patrick. I know through another 3rd cousin link that there was a Michael Joseph Dalton who emigrated to NY so perhaps he was another sibling??
