Address 1939, Dyserth, St Asaph, Flintshire
« on: Thursday 11 July 24 12:18 BST (UK) »
Address for John H Hughes and family in 1939 is transcribed as Buywn on Find My Past and Berwyn on Ancestry
Looking at the area on maps leads me to believe that Ancestry has it right but would appreciate opinions

If you have access to either of these sites and want to see the page

I read it as Berwyn.

There is a mountain range called Berwyn and also can be a name, among others, so used in Wales. Not heard of the transcript from FindMyPast.

Thanks Cas, that was my conclusion too.
I've tried old maps but individual house names don't get a mention unless they were very posh.
Can't find any electoral registers c 1930s for this area and we have no connection to the Hughes family but do have one to the evacuee who was billeted with them so at least I've managed to get that released and I have a rough idea of where it was within Dyserth

Just in case you haven’t seen this map (1964) – I can see lots of names that ARE on the register but I cannot see Berwyn. Maybe someone else can.

Going by the other listed names I think it is likely a house name. Only one called Berwyn.

Thanks Alan
Yes I had seen that, its on that map I based my rough idea of where it was, but I've been looking again and believe its one of the council houses which the occupants gave a name to, possibly in the block I've marked?

Looking at the page before and the page they are on, it was between the Red Lion and the New Inn

The page (image 14 on FindMyPast)before has

6 Council Houses is Schedule 173

image 15 has
'Eversky' Council Houses is Schedule 174
Berwyn  on Schedule 175

no 3 Council Houses is Schedule 176

Yes, looking at a newspaper search for “Eversley’, it seems to be a frequently-used house name in North Wales, so I’m thinking that the top entry on the page is actually intended as “Eversley, Council Houses” which would be number 5, and then the “Council Houses” part is taken as read for Berwyn, which would be number 4, then #3 un-named, then Glenhurst and Maes-y-lys to complete the block of six.

I’ve had a look on street view and it looks like the six houses are still there with the same numbers. (I *think* they are pre-war houses.) No sign of any house names that I can see, unfortunately.
