Hi, coombs.  Coincidentally, the bit I removed in my earlier reply was about our Scottish DNA.  I removed the paragraph as it was deviating from my original post.

But now that you brought it up ;D there could be a link to Scottish ancestors.  [I haven’t yet found roots in Scotland for any ancestors.]  According to Ancestry, Scottish DNA is primarily found in Scotland but is also found in Northern Ireland and Northern England (I have non-Stuart ancestors from both locations). Also, my brother’s Scottish DNA estimate is 34% but it can range from 11% to 34% which seems to indicate that there may not be a tie to an actual Scottish ancestor.

James Stuart, my ancestor, was born in Sligo (town? county? - his daughter’s death certificate simply states Sligo, Ireland).  Some of his siblings were supposedly born in Manorhamilton, Leitrim, Ireland.  James’ parents were supposed born in Ireland.

I know a tiny bit about movement and history between Scotland and Ireland.  I will research Ulster plantations to get a better understanding.

Your comments made me think of another approach to try for my Stuart line - I will contact my distant Stuart “cousins” to see if they also have unexpected Scottish DNA results.  If they don’t have ancestors from the regions covered by Scottish DNA, then it could indicate just the suggested travels between Ireland and Scotland or the possibility of having Scottish ancestors.

Thank you for your comments; they’ve been very helpful.
