Ancestry - Pro Tools - Merging Duplicates
« on: Thursday 18 July 24 15:54 BST (UK) »
Hello all

I'm having a complete brain melt down and would like some advice please...  ???

So I have upgraded to Pro Tools on Ancestry and on the whole I've got my head around it now. That is, with the exception of merging duplicate people. Now in the early days of me doing my tree (and I have no idea how) I seem to have made a tree within a tree if that makes sense. I'll try to explain.

Working my way through the duplicates I have merged two entries for a lady and she now has her husband three times on my main tree. If I click to choose just one of them it shows a different layout of relatives each time. If I have all three clicked to view I see all relatives. They all show as being on my main tree but how the heck do I sort this? I am fearful of deleting any of them as I don't want to lose years of research.... I have attached an image to hopefully show you what I mean.

Many thanks you lovely people in my computer  ;D

I don't think you have any option but deletion.

Choose whichever one has the most facts/sources attached to them to make the main person.

Skim through the other people of the same name and any facts from these that are not currently attached to the person designated as the main one.

Then delete the other extra people just leaving the one you have designated the main person to whom the max facts/sources are attached.

You may have to do likewise with spouses/parents/children to sort the tangle out.

It is possible to merge people in ancestry trees, from the facts page for any individual you can merge with duplicate, it's one of the options top right.  Spanner drop-down on a tablet, can't remember what it's called on a desktop or laptop but it's definitely there, top right.

You may need to edit relationships also, pencil symbol top right.

And check how many times your bride married Isaac , presumably it was only once so attach all marriage sources to the same event and then delete the spare marriages.

There was a time not so long ago when one of ancestry's "improvements" created a new event for marriages offered as hints even if you already had a date and source for the marriage in question, eg you already had gro entry and the hint was for the corresponding PR.  So the problem may not be of your making.  Thankfully they sorted it within a couple of days.

Hi,

You certainly should not have to delete anyone, but it is a fairly slow process.
I merged three trees, and the intersection generated lots of triple people.
You just need to go through each person, merging duplicates.

I find sometimes adding a number to the end of a name of one of the offending spouses help identify the correct merge individual. It makes it easier to search for them if you have a lot of John Smith’s and prevents. Errors which are then difficult to reverse.
If you can I would also recommend backing up your tree. A Gedcom download if nothing else. Good practice in any event to prevent any loss off hard won information.

Duplicates can easily happen.

The Pro Tools does give the option of “Compare”.

Whilst it may be a suck eggs comment, do use this feature as it can present people who are nit duplicates.

As I wrote in my own thread in my family tree “Annie Mary” was a popular pair of forenames and as well as my Grandma having these names two of her Cousins also had the same pair of names and Ancestry’s Pro Tools offered all three as duplicates.  Had I not compared them than my tree would have been messed up good and proper

Can you merge duplicates without upgrading to Pro Tools?

Yes, but the Op has specifically quoted upgrading to Pro Tools.
