Stuck already!
« on: Friday 19 July 24 03:17 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone..I have done well on my mother's side of the tree..got back to 1520..however on my father's side very disappointed to be stuck after my grandfather...I know my surname is common in the area of search...Graham.   Carlisle Cumberland UK.  I believe my grandfather's year of birth was 1914..I assume he was born in Carlisle...I have searched with Ancestry .com...I think I may hev found that his mother`s maiden name was Parkinson......that`s all I`ve got...if anyone has any suggestions as to how/where  I could search further I would be most grateful ...thanks

Hi perthblue
Welcome to Rootschat.

There is not enough information here to do any sort of research on.
You have not given your grandfather's full name.

What information have you found?
The 1939 Register should give his place and date of birth. What does this say?
In the 1921 Census, he would only be about 7 years old, so hopefully living with his parents.
What are their names?
If you have their names, have you found their marriage?

One step at a time!
Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

And who did he state as his father on his own marriage?
Do you know the names of any of his brothers & sisters (from family knowledge, ie your father’s aunts & uncles).

Why did you especially pick on the MMN Parkinson birth?

The 1939 register does not give place of birth - only birthdate & where the person was living in 1939

This is guess work without more information from “perthblue”
We don’t even have a Christian name for the grandfather born in 1914 Carlisle.
So a stab in the dark ………

James Tyson GRAHAM married Mary Elizabeth PARKINSON
31 Dec 1899 Penrith, Cumberland

1911 census
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X72M-TJH

There was a son named Frederick William GRAHAM born 1911
and then James GRAHAM born 1914 (see CaroleW post above)

It looks as if James GRAHAM (the father) died 25 Aug 1920 after serving in WW1.

OR there is this family.

(So you can see why we need a bit more information - we could choose either family and carry on but one of them must be incorrect).

James GRAHAM born 6 Sept 1914, died Jan 1983, Carlisle. is this your grandfather?

I think this could be his Birth reg James GRAHAM Dec qtr 1914, mmn WALKER 10b 1090

other births that could be connected

George 1916 D qtr 10b 977.
Ethel 1919 d qtr 10B 1206

There is a marriage of Ethel WALKER to John J. GRAHAM in 1914  June qtr 10b 1210 Carlisle

Those 3 births and the parents fit with a 1921 entry in Carlisle - we are not allowed due to copyright restrictions to give you detail from the 1921. you can look at a part for free on FindMyPast,  you can purchase an image for a set fee without having to join up to FindMyPast.

https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tb8/

These births are all available as a £3 instant jpeg from GRO.Gov.Uk.

There is also this birth

Margaret Monica 1913 M qtr  vol 10b page 1139. which is before that marriage.  I don’t know who she belongs to.

I'd be interested in the ancestor in 1520: name, location, sources.
Mead - Herts, Bucks, Essex
Pontifex - Bucks
Goldhurst - London, Middx, Herts
Kellogg/Kelhog - Essex, Cambs

It is quite possible that this is the correct family, but that “perthblue” has gone off track with the surname of Ethel.
Yes she is WALKER and not Parkinson.

James Graham's marriage certificate to Annie Johnstone is needed to confirm which is the correct family.

John James GRAHAM married Ethel WALKER in 1914 Carlisle

The 1921 census shows John James Graham born Carlisle abt 1890.
In the 1911 census John James Graham is with his family. Parents James Graham (49) and Martha (45), lots of siblings all born Carlisle
