Green writing on 1939 Register
« on: Sunday 28 July 24 20:57 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am aware that the 1939 Register was later used by the NHS to create NHS numbers and also to keep track on the population, such as updating the marital statuses of women etc. with updates next to their names and the date of marriage.

My great-great grandmother, Edith Rachel Davies was recorded on the 1939 Register as 'Edith R. Davies', but 'Rachel' is annotated above her name in green handwriting. Next to this, there is what I am assuming is a date '6-9-66' and a code that looks like 'ECIA BA'.

Edith died on the 11th October 1966, aged 85, and her death certificate records her as 'Edith otherwise known as Rachel' as she went by both names.

Does anyone know what the code could mean and why this alteration would be made?

Thanks,
BSmith

At the time she died the Register was being used by the NHS so they were aware of her death. The name  Rachel was added because that was how her death was registered. I can’t remember the codes offhand but almost certainly was for the additional name.

The date looks like 6 Aug 66 possibly, and all looks in same hand/pen.  It could be that she was recieving NHS treatment before her death, and her full name was corrected.

The code I would agree would likely relate to the NHS (region?) of the name change and was dated, as above, when changed.

a code that looks like 'ECIA BA'.

I think it is GA not BA.  There is another example higher up with GA but that is a CR283 amendment (marriage).

Could the earlier bit be EGA though that is the area code for Brighton, East Sussex if that is what it was supposed to be.

The top of the page is showing the area code for Port Talbot as XKAM, the last 3 letters have been used against another amendment on that page.

Maybe she went to Brighton for a few days before she died and had to see a doctor while she was there  ;D

There's a topic on this https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=741824.0
but in the end most seem to remain quite literally cryptic. Military records also made my head spin, but at least I eventually found out most coded name meanings.
I can't pretend to know anything about the register...but could it be Entry Correction Identity Amended or Altered.
Adding:another post where Guy Etchells († R.I.P.) suggests he'd seen most green entries to mean name changes after hospitalization & blue to mean marriage but that he'd also seen someone use the same colour throughout a whole page. (sure, wreck your own system)  so likely Cas was correct!
