Mary A. Kiernan / Earl Grey emigrant on the Eliza Caroline ship in 1850
« on: Saturday 10 August 24 12:20 BST (UK) »
Mary A. Kiernan left Dundalk workhouse and emigrated to Port Philip via the Earl Grey orphan scheme. She was 19 years old on arrival. Employed by a Mrs Eliza Sweetman, near Bridge Inn in Geelong for 6 months. All direction in marriage, death, children, descendants etc is much appreciated.

Not related, but Who is she the daughter of?

On the Famine Memorial website it says 'Parents not recorded', and looking at Irish Genealogy, there is no civil listing of a Mary A. Kiernan in any of the district registration areas within Ireland. There are no poor law union / workhouse papers for the years 1845-1850 for Dundalk. At this point all is unknown.

Re. Irish Genealogy did you check the year when civil registration kicked in?

You have her as "Mary A Kiernan" - is the "A" for "Ann" (from the passenger record Eliza Caroline). Victoria BMDs has an 1852 marriage for a Mary Ann Kiernan - have you checked that out?

way too early for civil birth records (i./e. civil registration) which started in 1864, you need to check for possible church baptism records.

The IrishGenealogy website does not have any church records for Co. Louth (it covers all areas for civil birth records but only a few areas for church records e.g. Dublin City, Co. Kerry, part of Co Cork etc)

As hanes teulu says there is a marriage of a Mary A KIERNAN to William DELENEY in 1852 at St Francis Church, Melbourne (41270 / 1852).

They had at least these children (indexed with mmn KIERNAN/KERIN/KEERAN)
1852 Elliza DELANEY (Melbourne)
1857 Margaret DELANY (Maryborough) (poss died 1924, Collingwood)
1862 Ellen DELANEY (Melbourne)

There are a number of other births to William and Mary (Anne) DELANEY (and variations) which have unknown mmn on the index.

Reasonably common names - so difficult to know if this is "your" Mary Anne.

A word of warning - A family tree on Ancestry has Mary Anne KIERNAN who arrived in 1850 marrying William DELENEY and dying in 1905. However, the Mary Anne DELANEY who died in 1905 aged 65 has parents William RYAN and Julia (nee GLEESON), and an in memoriam notice in 1918 for son John which also shows death date of parents Mary Ann and William - John DELANEY:
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/155110434
also has mmn RYAN -  so not Mary Anne KIERNAN who arrived 1850.

@hanes teula

Irish Civil Registration began in 1864.

Ship passenger list from Plymouth to Port Philip has her as Mary A. Kiernan
The Inward Overseas Passenger Lists state that her name is Mary Ann Kiernan. I believe this document is in the PROV.

Will checkout now for potential marriage in 1852, also will re look at baptismal registration too
Thank you for your help, much appreciated  :)
