Second one is perhaps mediastinum = space in your  breast which contains the heart and other structures.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

First one might be malignant tumour of orta = aorta = the body's largest artery.

He doesn't like crossing his "t's" does he?

Is there any chance of doing a snip of another part of the certificate to see if it's possible to spot other similar letters?

Otherwise, I think Bumble is close to the mark :)

Does the capital D with superscript stand for Ditto, meaning that the patient also suffered from malignant tumors in the mediastinum?

That would be my understanding.

Many thanks to all - didn't realise in my ignorance that he wasn't crossing the 't's but you're so right.

Hard enough to read some of those documents without that!

I'm happy to go with both suggestions as they're both too close not to be correct in my opinion.

Thanks again guys!

James
