Help locating a headstone
« on: Thursday 29 August 24 10:13 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and look forward to reading many of the topics.

I have deceased and living relatives in Scotland so looking for some help with locating a headstone for Thomas Joseph McBurney died on 2nd June 1976 and buried in sec H plot 153 in Eastern cemetery Arbroath. So, if anyone is willing to visit the cemetery and locate the plot could they also take a picture even if there is no headstone.

Thanks

Hi Rosie,
Thanks for responding. I have tried the find a grave route but even though there are supposedly 16 volunteers I've had no success and was advised to try this group. I would go myself but I live almost 300 miles away hence my request for help. I am a volunteer for my local area so appreciate the desire to locate a relative.

Thanks

Hi Mc100,

Your post hasn't yet generated the precise response you requested, unfortunately...so here are some suggestions which I hope will prove helpful:

1.)  You could ask the Mods to move your post to Rootschat's Angus (Forfarshire), Scotland, Board. Maybe someone more local to the cemetery will be willing to assist. To contact the Mods, I think you need to click on "Report to moderator" in the bottom right-hand corner of your post.

(I'm a lot more than 300 miles away from Arbroath so can't help you directly myself.)

2.)  You could post your request to Talking Scot, a forum which specialises in Scottish genealogy. It can be found here:

https://www.talkingscot.com/forum/

3.)  There are a few relevant Facebook groups where you could post a similar request. For instance:

Arbroath By The Community For The Community
https://www.facebook.com/groups/ABTCFTC/

Arbroath & Montrose District Scouts*
https://www.facebook.com/a.m.scouts/?locale=en_GB
* (I'm employing a bit of lateral thinking with this one...as a former scout, I think it might be an
interesting "mission" for one or more of their scouts to undertake.)

4.) You mentioned that you have living relatives in Scotland. If any of them live near enough to Arbroath, perhaps they could help.

5.)  Tay Valley Family History Society (FHS) has potentially useful resources (including members, of course) but almost all of these are only open to members...and membership currently costs £21 p.a. If you wish to explore their website, it's at:

https://tayvalleyfhs.org.uk/product/arbroath-west-kirk/

6.) The Cemetery appears to be administered by Dundee City Council who, for the rather exorbitant price (in my opinion!) of £43 per hour, offer to carry out research - although it's not clear whether that would include taking photos of graves.

However, they've published a map of the cemetery, on which section H is easily identifiable. It might be a good idea for you to add the link to it (please see below) when this thread is moved to the Angus Board on Rootschat; and if you post to Talking Scot, Facebook, or elsewhere.

The map can be found here:

https://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/sites/default/files/publications/Eastern%20Cemetery%20map%20A4_0.pdf

Dundee City Council have also got this web page which contains guidance and other potentially useful information:

https://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/service-area/corporate-services/democratic-and-legal-services/archives/help-your-research

Best of luck,

The death date date for the Thomas Joseph McBurney on the FAG link in rosie99's post, leads to a Thomas (Tam) McBurney on Billion Graves:

https://billiongraves.com/grave/Thomas-Tam-McBurney/46533557

Perhaps a relative of the Thomas who died in 1976?

Perhaps rosie99 meant to post https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/127305206/thomas-joseph-mcburney, the 1976 chap.

Hi scotmum,

It's definitely Thomas Joseph McBurney no Tam and thanks for helping
