There are a few John Phillips marriages to Mary Lewis in Wales 1810-1847.

1810 Bryngwyn, Monmouthshire.

I keep looking at her name on that certificate,  that is a weird L (Lewis).  The name could almost be Davis  :)

Where are they in 1841/51

Yes, I see what you mean. I also have the birth cert for Sarah Phillips' twin brother Daniel so have an example of how a 'D' was written, and it does look quite different to me, so I'm inclined to go with Lewis rather than Davis. What do you think?

I tend to agree with both.  I can't make it into a capital L, more an S.  But Sewis makes no sense.

On the question 'married or not?', recent research I have been doing for relatives, on late-Victorian ancestors in Fulham, suggest that it was common to claim marriage (or not, as convenient) and also to vary given names.  Luckily the surnames were uncommon, and enough records were available to work out a convincing tale.  Phillips and Lewis are not the commonest Welsh surnames but there are quite a lot about !
