Help needed to decipher some Latin, please
« on: Sunday 22 September 24 15:30 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I'm researching my Wood line in Staffordshire, and Find My Past has highlighted a baptism of a Thomas Wood to Johanis Wood in November 1682, in the Dilhorne All Saints Register.

However, when I look at the scanned image, it seems to me that the entry immediately above is also of interest, as it appears to refer to the burial of a Margreta(?) Wood, possibly on the same day - and possibly the wife of Johanis.

I'd be very grateful if someone could decipher the attached image please, so that I can see whether this relates to just one person of interest, or two!

Thanking you in anticipation,
David

The two are connected.

Margaret the wife of John Wood was buried November 29
Thomas the son of the aforesaid John Wood baptised November 29

There's something at the end of the first line that I can't make out. It looks like 1b2g
Mead - Herts, Bucks, Essex
Pontifex - Bucks
Goldhurst - London, Middx, Herts
Kellogg/Kelhog - Essex, Cambs

I think it's the year (1682), but for some reason the 2 has been written above the 8. Maybe the vicar's large hand or unwieldy pen couldn't get into the spine of the register?

Thank you both for your very speedy responses - they are very helpful  :)

Yes, the bit at the end of the line is the date - 1682.

It's very interesting that my thoughts were correct - and that the first entry is recording the burial of John's wife Margaret - as FindMyPast doesn't have this burial in its "index" - i.e. a search for burials of Margaret Wood in Dilhorne does not throw up this entry.

FindMyPast does have a burial of a Margreta Wood at Dilhorne on 11th September 1681 - but no reference to this 1682 burial. I'll have to inform FindMyPast.

Thanks again very much for your help.
David

The 11 Sep burial is the daughter (filia) of a " ? Wood" - I cannot make out given name (out of my depth with this old script).

It might be filia s Isabellae - with 's' for spuria (illegitimate); I'm fairly sure about Isabellae, but it's certainly not Thomas.

Thanks for the clarifying. My post originally included "I'm sure it does not read "Thomas"" but pulled it for fear of getting egg on my face!
