Struggling
« on: Friday 04 October 24 21:33 BST (UK) »
I have a great grandmother, born in the UK but with Irish parents, namely her father who was born in Down but Ancestry keeps giving me conflicting information about this guy.
My great grandmother is Cecilia Veronica Rogan, born 15th October 1892 in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England to John Rogan and Bridget Carton........ I think  ::)
John was born 21st April 1852 in Down, Bridget was born 1st December 1850 in Glendalough, Wicklow.
The only evidence I have for these two is what Ancestry produced and I've found in the past its not always that reliable.
At some point in time John and Bridget came to England and maybe to Scotland first, and here is where evidence starts to conflict.
I have an1881 census showing John and Bridget in Cumberland, with 3 children, I also have a couple of the same name in the 1881 census in Edinburgh, I'm assuming the only coincidence is there names as I'm also assuming the Cumberland couple are my relatives, given the fact Cecilia was born here in 1892.
To further complicate the matter I have Johns parents listed as a Michael Rogan born 3rd February 1822 and Mary Ann Lyun born 1825 in Seavaghan, these 2 could be the parents of the John Rogan in Scotland though.
Both Michael and Mary Ann have at some point emigrated to the USA as they both have deaths listed in Philadelphia.
So confusion reigns, you can see why I'm struggling to make sense of all this and any help this forum can give in sorting it would be gratefully appreciated.

Have you just taken your information from published trees ?
It is best to search yourself as much as you can.

Marriage June 1876 Bootle, Cumberland
John Rogan and Bridget Carton

The certificate would confirm their fathers’ names.

The Scottish John & Bridget are still in Scotland in 1901 - no daughter.  Bridget was nee McGourty

The Cumberland Rogans are in Cumberland in 1901 with daughter Cecilia

Forget the Scottish ones - concentrate on what you know as a fact about Celia/Cecilia

1911 shows John Rogan was b County Down & Bridget in County Wicklow

Here is a John Rogan, living in Millom, Bootle registration district in 1871.

He is in the household of his brother, Patrick.

The children of Patrick and Catherine Rogan show mmn Rogan

This would likely be their marriage

If Patrick and John are brothers, Patricks marriage to Catherine shows his father as Edward and not Michael

That’s right.
Do you have John’s father as Michael? Where is that record?

It might not be your John Rogan - that is why you need the marriage record.

Ancestry auto-filled it in and also gave me a birth record for A John Rogan with a mother Rose, given that Edward is the father of Patrick and that john actually stood witness at the marriage, I would suggest Michael is the father of ANOTHER John Rogan and I now have to find MY John Rogan's mother.
