Lily Ann Granderson, Potential ancestor?
« on: Monday 11 November 24 12:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone. I'm new to this site, so this is my first post. I reside in the United States of America. I believe I may be a potential descendant of Lily Ann Granderson through my maternal grandmother. The reason for this is because 1. My grandmother's maiden name was Granderson and 2. Lily Ann was enslaved and died in Mississippi, which is where my grandmother have family ties to. The farthest ancestor I was able to uncover was my 2nd great-grandfather Joe Granderson who was born in the 1880s in Mississippi and died in 1950. He had a son Luther (born 1905) and a daughter Minnie with my 2nd great-grandmother, Ellen Agree. I'm coming here to ask for help in seeking a potential connection with my 2nd great-grandfather and Lily Ann. Unfortunately, I've hit a brick wall in my research 😞 Any help is appreciated 🙏🏽

Welcome to Rootschat!

Firstly if your Maternal Grandmother's maiden name was Granderson, any children born to her would have the name to whom she married, unless of course she was illegitimate. I did find a Lily Ann Granderson, and this particular lady wrote books, so don't know if this is the person you mean. She however was born in 1821, and had two children David C Granderson born 1846 and Mary J born 1850. So with your Grandfather Joe being born in 1880 she would have been far too old to have a child born in 1880 as you say he was.

For a start, is this your ancestor?
In the 1910 census he is Luther J. Granason, age 4, born in Mississippi.
Living in Jasper, Miss.
Mother Ella, born 1887 in Mississippi
Father deceased, born in Alabama
Sister Dora M.L Granason

There are some people with the exact spelling Granderson, but not named Luther.

This is possibly the right family. My grandmother (who died last year btw) mentioned her father's biological father wasn't in their life and his mother dated another man. Not sure if she was married to him though.

And I don't know much about her. She went by Minnie Lee King at some point in her life. She died in the 1980s. Being that there's M L initials in the name this is likely her.

This is likely the correct family but I'm not 100% sure. And I may have gotten his father's birthplace wrong. I believe Ancestry does state he was born in Alabama but I'll double check.

Thank you for the welcome!
And yes this is the Lily Ann I'm referring to. I'm aware she's not likely his mother. I figured maybe she's a grandmother of his or could be related in another way.
