Finding George Brown after 1901 - Last seen in Llanelly
« on: Monday 11 November 24 19:12 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find George Brown (also known as George Mortimer Brown) b. Ludchurch, Westerton Pembrokeshire in 1850 and lives in St David's until at least 1894.

In 1901 he is on the census as George Jas Brown (widower) living with his 15 year old son Albert Mortimer Brown (b. 1886 in St David's Pembrokeshire).  In 1901 they are in Delabeche Street Llanelly Carmarthenshire.

In 1911 they are both 'missing' from the census.

In 1916 Albert is in Swansea getting married and is on the 1921 census.

Can any one help me find George?

Presume you have looked for a death between 1901-1911?  Does Albert's 1916 marriage cert show whether George is deceased?

I have looked for a death and the nearest I can find is 1913 in Swansea but with a common name there are other candidates in the decade after that.

If this is the death you mean he was George Brown, occ Hawker who was staying at Vaughans Lodging House in Swansea.  He died in the workhouse infirmary. (Western Mail 22 March 1913)

Thank you.  His wife died in 1893 so I am not sure why he is recorded as married.  It is definitely him as he was born at Slebech which is in Ludchurch parish and next to Wiston.  He is living with one of his sons in 1901.  He sold his wife's family farm and retired in 1890.  He was arrested more than once for drunkeness in the early 1890s in St Davids and with his wife dead in 1893 he is before the school board for his sons' truancies.  Two sons went to the US, one joined the Royal Navy and another moves to Aberdare and works as a baker.  I have no idea where the Jas comes from as his name was George Brown and there is no middle name on any other document.  He took to using George Mortimer Brown (as did his soms) as Mortimer was his wife's family.

Thank you.  May or may not be him if his personal circumstances had got even worse after 1911.  There are some other candidates in 1916 and 1925.

Could this be him? Found on FreeReg. Around the same time my g-g-grandfather died in the Union Workhouse in Llanelly, but I know when numbers increased some were moved, especially to Bridgend.

Yes that is a possibility.  Thank you.   Now asylum has a nuanced meaning at that time.  Are we talking lunatic or merely a hospital for the sick?
