Request regarding the Cellar Bar, Batley, pediment and portico features
« on: Saturday 28 December 24 11:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
In a prominent position on a roof pediment over the front doorway of the Cellar Bar, Batley, sits a stone dog.  image attached.
Do you know the purpose or significance of the dog, and do you know the history of the building.
Also over the portico of the same entrance is a carved bust of a male.  Any idea who this bust might be of?

Regards,

Janet

It seems this was originally some sort of fabric warehouse and there were a series of similar buildings along this road.

The map shows the corner occupied by "warehouses". Would these be the same buildings? Unable to judge if the current buildings predate the map. The steps seem to fit?

hanes teulu: Yes! that is the building at the corner of Station Road opposite the station, and appears to be the building in the newspaper clip.

Little Nell: it is BHG who are carrying out the survey.

The official “Listing” ov the buildings is of no help. Neither is the Conservation Area Appraisal itself - https://www.kirklees.gov.uk/beta/trees-listing-and-conservation/pdf/conservation-appraisals/StationRoadBatley.pdf - but you might find something in the Bibliography.
