Hi Alice,

Just had a quick scan through the IGI index and saw these:

Margaret Davy - baptised        09 AUG 1803       Saint Buryan, Cornwall
Parents - James Davy and Alice

John Sampson - baptised       11 OCT 1794       Paul, Cornwall
Parents  -  John Sampson and Elizabeth

Both of these are proper listings from parish registers.

This one is a listing submitted by an LDS member so would need proper verification :

William Matthews birth 02 Dec. 1798 Paul, Cornwall
Parents - Joseph Matthews and Sarah Yeoman Richards

If you've already seen these, nothing lost - if not I hope they're useful starting points ... :)

Thank you, Gougy the Margeret Davy is definately promising as their seems to have been just a few Davy families in St Buryan at this time. Unfortanatly Sampson & John Sampson's from Paul, are very prolific but still something to keep in mind as is William Matthews.

What appears to be the children of William and peggy are also extracted records on the IGI

viz  Margaret Christening:  11 AUG 1833   Paul, Cornwall, England
John Thomas Christening:  26 MAY 1844   Paul, Cornwall, England
William James Christening:  28 MAR 1841   Paul, Cornwall, England
Hannah Christening:  04 APR 1830   Paul, Cornwall, England
Joseph Christening:  11 OCT 1835   Paul, Cornwall, England

(parents William and Peggy - or Margaret)
Batch C023411

If John is not on your census records he may have died before 1851. You can check deaths by trawling through the film available from the LDS.

The children of William and Mary also have baptisms on the IGI
ELIZABETH JANE RICHARDS 12 APR 1835 Madron, Cornwall, England
LYDIA WILLIAM RICHARDS 24 FEB 1850 Madron, Cornwall, England
WILLIAM RICHARDS  12 SEP 1831 Madron, Cornwall, England
JAMES GENDALL RICHARDS 18 AUG 1844 Madron, Cornwall, England
ELLEN RICHARDS  28 DEC 1846 Madron, Cornwall, England
RICHARD RICHARDS  25 AUG 1839

Batch P001692 - you may well find earlier generations here - this batch is for 1687 - 1875

There is only one suitable marriage in Madron for William and Mary
Spouse:  MARY GENDALL Marriage:  11 JUN 1831   Madron, Cornwall, England
which ties in nicely with the name of son James.
Batch M001691 1577 - 1875

The IGI is a wonderful resouce. You should find much in these batches

Thank you Trish,

Your help is very much appreciated. I took a relook on West Penwith resourses & strangely their records for Paul baptisms start on the very same date as John's christening on IGI, yet no mention. When visiting RO, I have at one time found date wrong by one year concerning an extracted record maybe something similar here, or was just missed by WPR.

I have come across the William Richards & Mary Gendall marriage on IGI & I think my own predjudices, that this side of my family were extremly religious stopped me from adding this as they married after birth of first child, thinking about this, how silly & as pre victorian not unusual, but also why it has helped to have someone with a fresh mind add, thank you.  Lydia William Richards is also new, & again probably died as I have not found on census, thank you again.

Kind regards Alice

Hi Alice

Glad to give another perspective - hope it helped - When I discovered my grandmother had a child before her marriage (and it was 90 years after the event that I found out) - it took some time to believe - the grandmother I knew would not have done this - but, of course, she was over 50 before I knew her.

Thanks Trish, I have now found death record of Lydia Richards aged 7months.

& thanks Ian.

I have come across that website & their are some of my family there, but not as far back as I have got as they are only linked by marriage & not in the main names, but thank you.  Adrian Eddy's site is another good one for this part of Cornwall.

Gougy, I've found some promising info on IGI & Cornwall census  concerning Joseph Matthews but need to obtain evidence that he is William's father, as their are 2 Joseph Matthews, both farmers of around the same age, I now think Sarah Richards who was about  16 years older than Joseph was probably married to a Yeamon before, as their is a Sarah Yeamon living in their household in 1841 census.
