Help with surname on All Saints' Batley Marriage BTs 1635
« on: Thursday 02 January 25 10:25 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

Happy New Year.

I am having difficulty transcribing the surname of Philip shown on the attached image.

Philip's name is the sixth entry.

Philip ? & Jane Womersley.  Maried Septebr [September] 9th.

Family Search and FindMyPast suggest: Udall.

The parish register transcription on Ancestry suggests: Ball

Help!

Regards,

Janet

I don't think the first letter is a U.  It could be a t or .possibly a long s but ..

Let's hope one of the experts come along.

Looking at another source I think it probably is Udall (attached), although I agree the letter on the copy you have is not very much like a U at all.

A problem arises with Lewis21 image, where this is a copy made after the interregnum 1649 to 1660.  When all previous parish records held at the church had to be copied into parchment leaved bound books by the cleric, being permagnus usus, of great use.

The Bishop's Transcripts were submitted to the diocesan bishop’s registrar, annually.  In this case 1636.

Janet - The one that Lewis referred to is on Ancestry.

Are there any baptisms of any offspring of the couple or deaths?

That is correct Gadget, the Ancestry image is a copy taken from the Parish register (PR) years later.  The original PR no longer exists.
I have searched for baptisms and deaths of offspring and parents using Udall and variants, with no success.

There's a baptism for an Ann Udall on 23 March 1648, Leeds, St  Peter.  Father is Phillip Udall

And ,same place, Michael Udal, bpt 13 Feb 1642. Father Philllip

Maybe??
