No indication if it is him though

Yes I saw that too.  Having lost his driving licence, I thought it was quite possibly him.

The Liskeard chap. Trying to figure out who he is to definitely rule him out. Not having much luck!

Cornish graves http://www.cornishgraves.org.uk/grave-search-results/ has an entry.
When you click on view details you get “additional name ‘Helen’
Additional burial 1976”

Cornwall Memorial Inscriptions on FindMyPast has a Helen Allan died (buried ?) 31 May 1986.

So is one of those dates for Helen a typo?
In any case, I cannot find a death that obviously matches for either year.

Following up the 1949 Address gives a few more clues to follow/eliminate...
Gloucester Citizen 18-Aug-1950 p 3
Apartments Wanted.

Young Married Couple - has he remarried?
No Family - Estranged/divorced from Mildred and children?
D. Allan  - Was he known as Duncan or is it Wifes initial?
Gloster 24427 9am-4pm - Work Telephone?

This was the 1950 phone number of G & W E Downing Ltd, Maltsters, Gloucester docks.
According to https://gsia.org.uk/sites/reprints/2008/gi200803.pdf, in the early 1950's major engineering and construction were carried out at the site.  I would suggest that this 'Allan' was employed on some part of the site/engineering works given he'd been reported as a 'site supervisor' in 1949.  I wonder which engineering firms from Bath might be involved in such works.

It's far too easy to assume that a John Duncan ALLAN's (note spelling) death recorded at Liskeard in 1976 is our quarry. Most unlikely.

I wouldn't discount him, presumably he or somebody well known to him would have placed the copy for the accommodation wanted ad.  They used 'ALLAN' in the ad and he was reported as 'ALLAN' in the Keynsham magistrates court.  Was he hiding something with the change of surname?

The Liskeard John Duncan Allan was living at 5, Shortacross, Tremar, Liskeard at the time of his death (1976).  He appears in the telephone directory for 1973 as J D ALLAN at the same address.  In the 1978 telephone directory J D ALLAN is replaced by 'H ALLAN' at the same address, No idea who he/she is though. I would presume this is the mysterious 'Helen' mentioned on the memorial inscriptions as an additional burial that there is no obvious death reg for.  Have to wonder if it's an alias.

Was Helen's death registered under her previous surname, but she had also used Allan as an alias?  Is the burial register or electoral register available?

She may have died in another district, but from FreeBMD and assuming she was still alive in 1978
(phone book) the only death of a Helen registered in Liskeard in 1986 was:
Nicholson, Helen Mary    dob 21 Oct 1898  Liskeard 21 207   07.1986
(also known as Ellen Mary, indexed twice)

Looking at second names there is one possibility:
Puckey, Kate Helena      dob 24 Jun 1907  Liskeard 21 235   08.1986

mckha489 the Bath engineering company Stothert & Pitt (S & P) were manufacturers of gigantic dock-side cranes that still exist in Bristol and around the world. Being a large and long-established industrial engineering company since the 19th century until the 1980s, and Bath's largest ever employer, (despite the city's famous tourism status), it's highly likely surely that S & P were JD Allen's employer c1949. What do you think? Thank you for yours and Scoop's enormous input.

Yes Molly, I’ve been eyeing up Helen Mary Nicholson too.
She has a husband & family in Nottingham in 1939.
Annoyingly there are no annotations on the 1939 suggesting use of Allan.  Her husband died in Brighton in 1971.  (Added - a daughter married Brighton 1957).

Not one of them seems to have a will, nor even an admin!  At least,  I haven’t found any.

Babel, I don’t know anything about engineering works, I am sorry. But it certainly sounds a reasonable scenario which would meld nicely with the likely 1950 place of work identified by Scoop.
