23andMe Offer
« on: Friday 10 January 25 10:49 GMT (UK) »

I see 23andMe are doing an Ancestry offer of £69.

My DNA is on every other platform and in the interests of I dont know what I dont know, it cant be ignored that they have the 2nd biggest database out there.  I have no interest in any of their other "medical" offerings etc.

However, we all know of their troubles and the talk of them going under in October subsequent to their data breach and other poor management.

Does anybody have a view of them as of today?  Is this a last ditch effort to get some cash in to pay for their recent lay offs or are they on the road back to redemption?

Cheers

Have you uploaded your Ancestry DNA to Gedmatch and to My Heritage?

If you think their kit is worth £69 and you get some useful results then that would be great, if you get nothing then all you will lose is the cash and if they fold fingers crossed that the embers of their Company get picked up by another Company.

Yes, my DNA is on every platform out there apart from 23 and Me. My niece is on there but Ive never seen her results as she has long lost her login details!!

I tend to agree with you.  Some folks are getting into a funk with what happens to your DNA if a company goes bust, but as I reckon everybody's DNA will be out there soon whether they like it or not Im too worried about that.

Cheers

I would say it's worth it for the curiousity value. If you don't test there, you'll never know!

I have quite a number of matches on 23andme who haven't shown up on any other DNA site. The number of new matches has slowed to a tiny trickle in the last year or so, but there's still all the older matches in the database.

I also had a new match pop up recently for a rather unexpected first cousin once removed!

Forgot to mention.

On Gedmatch I have a few DNA Matches who tested with 23 & Me, zero response from those who I sent emails to.

Fingers crossed you have better luck.

Thanks all.  23andMe seem to attract customers quite apart from all the other platforms.  Maybe its that their MO wasnt genealogically based, to start with at least.

I have no brick walls to break down but like I say, my motto for life is you dont know what you dont know so I will give it a punt.
