The sale on the 23andme website seems to be over, but the Health and Ancestry kit is now on offer on Amazon for £79 with free postage. That kit would enable you to add a 23andme+ subscription for £50/year

As I say, I took up this offer and the results are in.

Tbh, it is all quite disappointing, both in terms of the results (which obviously involves an element of luck) and the site itself .  The closest match at 1% (ca 77 cM) is lower than my closest matches on MH and even My LivingDNA.  I have 20 closer matches than that on Ancestry. I know the purists will say that the distant matches are the most interesting but thats not my point.  I add that most matching levels, which are given in % rather than cM, are significantly higher than Ancestry levels as per recent TIMBER discussions here cf with MH

I can certainly understand why they are struggling as even an avid DNA genealogist as me, I was much pretty much done after 30 minutes playing around and I am sure I will only revisit sporadically to look for new matches.

The belief that you can begin to build a family tree only using some matched 3rd cousins once removed and 10th cousins etc is laughable.

All the trait and historic match junk stuff is there if you want it.  The entry level haplogroup could have been interesting but in my case wasn't.

Still glad I did it, because you just dont know do you, but very underwhelming

The disparity between results on different sites and the number of testing companies is a large part of the problem with dna right now.  Aside from the security issues they all face I've yet to find a decent match on any platform outside of Ancestry I don't have any matches on FtDNA or My Living DNA above 50cM and only three or four on MH.

So far today I've had another 3x MH advert pops up on facebook carping on about ethnicity being the jewel in the crown of dna testing and there's yet another 'limited time dna sale' offer. I almost launched the laptop out the window again and as I live 3 floors up that's not good.
