Hello,
Just trying to fill out some side lines on my tree....

Anthony Proudlock, son of John and Mary Ann nee Jackson, born 1876 Trimdon, Durham, England. Last found trying to desert from the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders in Ireland summer of 1892, he was discharged to a military escort on 13 July 1891. Then I loose him.

Would he have stayed in the army or been discharged once he served his sentence? I am afraid I am not very knowledgeable about military matters :)

I can't find him in 1901/1911 England or Ireland census, or a death registration in England/Wales.

(Interestingly his nephew Arthur Butterfield b. 1918 also joined the same regiment and was captured by the Japanese in Singapore. The Butterfield family is one of my main interests)

Grateful for any help.

The record is on FindMyPast.

He appears to have gone awol more than once and was discharged 7 Jun 1893 for having made a false statement as to his age when he enlisted.

His attestation was Dec 1891 and his age was given as 18 years and 7 months.  Occupation Tailor, or it could be Sailor, hard to tell!

He is a mystery.  I am wondering if he changed his name and/or went abroad, as there is no suitable UK, or Irish death registration that I can find.

Thanks for looking.

I haven't looked any further so its probably just a coincidence, but there are records on FindMyPast for a male named A Proudlock aged 21 and a male J Proudlock aged 44 travelling from Sydney to Freemantle aboard the Marloo, departing 20 Dec 1895

Interesting. If it is them the father John George Proudlock b. 1846 is back in Co Durham in 1911 as a widower boarding with a William Watson & family in Trimdon. Possible death of wife Mary in 1902 reg Sedgefield.

Back to the drawing board, perhaps. I am about to see if anything pops up on Commonwealth war graves.
