James ADKINS 1852-?
« on: Friday 10 January 25 13:16 GMT (UK) »
James ADKINS was born in East Stonehouse in Jan 1852 the son of Staff Sergeant James Adkins RM and Sarah MEADOWS.

Rather than join the Marines like his father and grandfathers he opted to become a sailor. He obtained his second mate's certificate on 24 Nov 1873 but I have been unable to locate him thereafter.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well done Rosie! That's him.

Just got to find his death between 1875 & 1886

Did find a death in the goldfields in 1876 but cannot be sure if it is him. No age given.

Looks as if he died before 31 Oct 1879.

There is mention in the paper of the sale of property of the late James Adkins, consisting
of  Two cottages in High-street, and 13 Shares in the Hobart Town and Launceston Marine Insurance Company

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/8982859?searchTerm=%22James%20Adkins%22

I can’t see a death for him in Tasmania, Victoria, NSW, QLD or SA.
Perhaps he died at sea, in international waters?
I also didn't find any children born to him in Tasmania.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Thanks all. I had suspected he died at sea but hadn't spotted any possible connection with Tasmania.
